Monitor V - Yes, another one!

Episode 4

Cranky

The crank, shafts, bearings and inner flywheel occupied most of last week.

Starting with the crank. Drilled, tapped and ends were rounded. I was going to setup the rotary table to do the rounded ends. Instead, I scribed the radius and used the 6” belt sander and was finished in a few minutes. Refined with files and the Scotchbrite wheel on the grinder.

A bit of threading and keyway cutting finished up this group.

Now, a 3” piece of Durabar in the 3-jaw to turn the inner flywheel. Absolutely a delight to turn the continuous cast.

After parting off at .625 (actually a few thou thicker to allow for finishing the cut face) moved to the mill and faced to final thickness.

Centered and then the center and offset holes drilled and reamed.

For Zee. One way that I chamfer hole edges. Very slow speed.

The flywheel is held to the shaft with a set screw. Since I had plenty of 10-32 setscrews, I first drilled the tap drill hole through to the center and then set the hole depth for a clearance hole a bit larger in diameter than the shank of the 10-32 tap.

OK, Zee. Here’s my other method of chamfering holes. Noga tool.

Now a 1” diameter brass round for the press fit bearing in the flywheel.

Now, into the press.

The completed flywheel on the crankshaft

I’ll get onto the bearing retaining rings after my Durabar road trip tomorrow. Hoping to return with the cylinder material.

Best,
Stan

Great progress Stan!!  I was about to ask about the galloping inner flywheel, but I see you changed orientation and reposted those last few pics. Should definitely work better this way  Everything is looking really good...keep it coming.

I was trying to get it posted in a hurry.

Looking good Stan

Why did you do the "bearing" in brass as it is not really a bearing but more a bush (no rotation)?

I am think of doing my crankshaft in the more conventional way of silver soldering etc and then spliting the con rod end.

Looking good, Stan.  I would note the dearth of recipes in this thread, though....

Thanks, guys.

Brass because I had a small piece and I love shiny brass v

I was going to solder the crank instead of the keyway but it is difficult to assemble between the two inner plates. Pretty tight in there. I think Julius nailed this one.

Forgot the recipe du jour. I'll post shortly.

Thanks for the update Stan.  Just noticed some more differences in details between the metric and imperial plans.

Nice done Stan.

And thanks for the tips on chamfering.

Nice work Stan.  I like the crankshaft assembly.  That's a new approach to me.

If you see any 1" bronze shafting at Durabar, spot me a few feet of it and I'll pay you for it next time at R&T.

Good luck tomorrow, it's always a spin of the wheel over there.

Cheers,
Phil

What did you see Vince?

Just minor things Stan.  Like the crankdisk having a keyway on the metric plans and also the crank web having a set screw on the threaded side.

I was trolling Ericsson's original Monitor drawings on the Stevens Institute of Technology website.

https://rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu/search/results/?rtype%5B%5D=&key=root&query=ericsson+monitor

After I saw the shape of the crank "flywheel" vs my round version, I took a closer look at Rich Carlstadt's Monitor video and there is the Ericsson designed crank.
I'm really thinking of remaking the crank disk in the original shape.
Anyone see any issues like "the damn thing won't run"?

Best,
Stan
