Stan doesn't let any grass grow on him.  I expect to see his working while Z and Cletus are still taking about BBQ.

One has to admit that the recipes are better on Zee's build than on the others.

I know that this build will be great. A great start. Is it always better to make a full-depth cut with the saw or just in that particular case? I am one who probably spends way too much time making small incremental cuts, but that is probably because I only have small, cheap machines that can't be forced without dire consequences.

Now that we've seen the mikrokator, I'm guessing that the 1/2-in. Starrett micrometer is just passe'. Bad case of T.E.S.* here.

No, no. The ½" mike gets used much more than the Mikrokator. Kind of fun though to be able to compare parts to .0001. Couldn't pass it up for $20.
This is the dash 4 version. There are dash 5 (.00001) and Tom Lipton's is a dash 6 (.000001) millionths. He put his finger on the jo block and the needle climbed pretty quickly from the heat expansion.

Monitor V - Yes, another one!

Episode 2
I was framed!

I’ve been looking at the “windows” in the base frames and thought the the plain cutout could use a bit of depth.

After a some time at the computer, I came up with a frame that would insert into the openings.

After thinking about how to machine them, I did a “duh” and sent them to the 3D printer.

Just laid in place

They will be painted along with the frames. Still deciding if I want to do acetone vapor smoothing or allow the texture to remain. Any thoughts?

Stan

Hm...I'm not sure I would do it in the first place. But let's see how it ends up.
In any case...yes...smooth them. I think they would blend in better. They shouldn't attract the eye...only add a nuance.

Hey Stan!

I think that I would have surfaced them on the CNC out of brass; and then soft soldered them in place.  :LittleDevil:

I know a guy in the UK that would have filed them to perfection and soft soldered them on his hot plate.  I'm sure that however you decide to finish them; they will add some nice detail to the engine.

It seems that I'm still playing catch up on the many builds in process; you are off to a great start on this interesting engine.

Interesting! Are you going to put them in the oval opening too?

Smooth would be better. Maybe leave a line at the corner like a joint line.

If one had CNC at this time...

Once they're filed to fit tightly and all painted they should blend in nicely. In the last hour, I've decided to vapor smooth them.

Stan, I am curious to see how the smoothing looks. Have you thought about some kind of filler like bondo?

I've done acetone vapor smoothing on many ABS printed parts. The filament layer lines all but disappear and the surface is glass-like. I may have to give them a rub with a fine abrasive paper to provide tooth for the primer and paint as I've never painted a vapor smoothed part. I printed a few extras for practice.
Of course, I'll post pics.

And, speaking of Bondo, a body shop guy told me about this. Better than regular Bondo for fine work.

Stan
