A sad little engine
« on: April 21, 2016, 08:28:14 AM »
A mate bought this little engine at a boot fair. He tried to make the missing parts and get it going but eventually brought it over to me.
I've cleaned up the flywheel and pulley, and pumped the boiler to 3 bar.
It is missing its single acting cylinder and piston so that's the first order of business.
It is stamped by a Mr. Patterson, obviously home made, maybe an old school project?

The stroke is 3/4" and I shall make the piston 1/2" dia.

With a little TLC, you can turn it into the "little engine that could" Jon. Please keep us posted with pictures as well please. The only thing that is sad is when such nice little projects that someone obviously spent a lot of time on, languish for lack of someone caring.  Good on you for taking on this little orphan and brining it back to life!!

Today I re-soldered the pipe joints and checked the safety. I ended up re-cutting the seat and popped a bronze ball in with a bronze spring. It blows at +12 psi now.
I roughed out a CI cylinder and made a brass piston to fit, then marked out and started the piston rod.
Another couple of hours should do it.
Pics to follow.

So do you get to keep it once you get the refitting all done?

No Bill, Martin gets it back, he's supplying the materials, I'm just getting it to a stage where he can carry on.

I've done my part, he can have it back to finish and polish as he likes now.
I made the cylinder from a bit of CI I had in the box, fitted a stud to pass through the re-bushed centre hole, then scribed the port from the existing.
A brass piston and rod completed it.
I had it running on air, have to steam it next.
It will need running in of course.

Nicely done   I think that my brother made a similar engine at school, but they mounted the cylinder on top of the boiler as the basis for a (never finished) traction engine.
Best regards

Roger
