AOG's Reichart pip squeak completed.
« on: April 02, 2016, 09:11:05 PM »
It's a runner but it's obvious that the design wasn't intended for people with small compressors. I get just about a minute on on tank of air and if I open the whistle my little 3 gallon compressor can't keep up. On the plus side the design gives it a pleasant sounding chuff when it's running. Here are some pics.

Here is a video of it running. (Please excuse the focus issues)

Now I need to figure out what build next. I'm currently leaning towards doing Elmer's Scottie.

Till next time.

Nice!!   :cartwheel: looks great, runs nice and smooth.  :whoohoo:

Right at the beginning and end it sounds like a little bit of an air leak? If so, try turning it over by hand with a little lapping compound between then cylinder and backplate, might get you a closer fit and a longer run. Clean it well before running on air again so you don't get the grit into the piston.

Thanks everyone. The air leak drove me crazy until I realized that it was an intentional part o the design. The cylinder is made from hex stock and when it's on the exhaust stroke the inlet port is exposed. I thought I screwed up and went back and remeasured against the plans and I was dead on. The whistle is on the intake side of the engine. When the intake port is uncovered it has less air resistance than the whistle and the whistle drops in volume. As the cylinder moves back and covers the port the air is redirected up the whistle and it gets louder. It's quite an ingenious design.

Great runner Tony and nice to see it all finished up too. I got the thread restored for you as you can see also.

Sorry about that. I realized that I had posted the same picture twice. When I went to change it I think I hit delete instead of edit. The correct picture is in there now.

Thanks

That's a nice engine Tony.  I like the flywheel and will be going back through your build thread to see how it was done.

Thanks, I've been using Tinglett's flywheel builder to make these kind of spoked flywheels. It works great and it's easy to use. If you're intrested I would read this thread:

Very nice Tony. Flywheel turns well and I like the color scheme.
Congrats!
