Hey Zee, thanks for looking in. I thought I had done a Zee  this morning  ::)

I was just having a fondle of the Sole Plate casting and marking up its drawing with real measurements ready for some machining when I saw the end that the cylinder mounts on was 58.75mm diameter and the only measurement I remember from yesterday was 54mm  :o Thankfully that was the length of the cylinder not the outside diameter which is sitting at just over 60mm  :)

It is going to be difficult not touching these until Sunday.

Thanks Zee, there is plenty of time left

The box bed had a couple of slump marks around where the CI had been poured. So as I had some JB already mixed it was used to fill the slumping and a couple of sand inclusions  ;)

:noidea: I am confused (easily done early on a Sunday morning when I am thinking of new machine tools) why is it that I am finding two different governors on these engines?

My drawing is shown below but half the engines I find photos of have a more Watts style governor.

They used to sell two types of governor now they only do the one which is the Watt type also found on the beam, etc

I should think you will be able to fabricate the early type, the "Kit" was realy only a pack of metal and maybe the base casting if the particular engine needed one.

There is a thread on ME about IanSC'S No 9 which goes into some detail about governors

Here's the governor on the S9 that I rebuilt, no idea on the vintage of the castings, I do know that some of the Stuart Turner engines in the collection date back to the 1920s, or early 30s.

 8) Yes that looks similar to the older type of governor. Thanks Ian

I had a bit of a play today. I now have the Sole plate mounted onto a bit of scrap aluminium so I can use it as a jig. The two mounting holes nearest the cylinder had to be at two different distances from the rear mounts as the lugs on the casting were not in line  :ShakeHead:

I also acquired  :naughty: this castings for a Major Beam engine pulley. It is a bit too small a diameter, a bit thin and its hole is too big  :disappointed:

Don't know how you do it Jo, juggling all of these projects! Mind you, this one is simple by  comparison, to me it would probably be my biggest project to date!

Jason, If you compare it to a Chinese mill it was  ::) horrible. Best you stick to your super high precision Chinese made machine tools, just like you avoided touching Mr Silky when you visited  ;)

Jo

So you are going to hold out for a matching pair of vertical and Horizontal Hardinge mills then :ShakeHead:

I did touch him briefly but tried to keep away so that I would not catch the bug :hellno:

Did you take any photos of the test ride? What was so bad, was it the design of the machine or was it just past its best?
