Pendleton, SC show, 2016
« on: March 05, 2016, 06:14:46 PM »
Actually the show is in Piedmont, SC this year but moving back to Pendleton presumably. So far the show has been well attended won't maybe a few more exhibitors than last year. I will post pictures tonight but here is a teaser...Chuck Rhodes (friend of Dave Otto) Lightning Balanced Engines...yes he has two of them at the show. Absolutely beautiful too!!! That's Chuck sitting there in the background.

OK guys, I will add a photobucket slideshow but I wanted to pull out a few pictures separately first. The first three are of Chuck's Lightning Engines which were a highlight of the show for sure. I will also add a video of one of them running later after I edit it and upload it. The fourth picture is of the MEM attendees at the show, from left to right...Larry Hoke, Dan Rowe (rodan), Kurt (kvom), and yours truly. Its still a small show but its still very much alive and this year brought a few new exhibitors which is a good sign!! It was a nice day and good to get out and share what we've been up to. Stay tuned for more...

If this works right, it should take you to the slideshow on photobucket...

Great slide show Bill. Thanks.
Looks like a good assortment of engines too and interesting items as well.
I hope it keeps going and growing.

You said attendance was good...a lot of young people?

Define young Zee. In some venues you and I are young right?? :lolb:  If you mean teens and 20's there were a few but I wouldn't say a lot.

How was the event advertised?

As far as I know, mailings to last years attendees and word of mouth through various local antiques engine clubs, and mention on a few forums like MEM.

Hopefully I'm not out of line...

Flyers...libraries, schools, school labs/shops, churches...any maker shops in the area? Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts.
I'm sure you get the picture.
Anyone available to make a simple web page? Just so people can look and see when/where. Including the pics you took.

Just seems a worthwhile event.

Zee, you are probably right. Keep in mind I am not one of the organizers and this year almost didn't happen so I will take having a show at all as a small victory. As I noted earlier, assuming there is a show next year, it will likely be back at the school gym in Pendleton, which is a more visible venue for spectators. Sometimes slower, more manageable growth can be a good thing to

Bill,

Thanks for posting the photos and video.  That's my kind of show. Small, friendly, and a lot of nice models.  It looks a bit like the Zanesville show.

Too bad Illinois is so many miles from SC.

Absolutely. Just thinking out loud.
Don't want growth to be too slow either. It's difficult starting things like this. Rather like a business.

Something more than a small victory I'd say.  ;D
Please provide my, and I believe MEM's, congratulations to the organizers.

One more short video and my digital media for the day will be depleted. I think Kurt said me might add some pictures also though. This video is of Doug Kelley's Little Snow engine...which is 60% size of the original  Snow Model. Towards the end of the video you can see Doug's hand in the video which will give some idea of how much smaller this little guy is.

I hope it will too Dave, it pretty easy driving distance for me and the guys coming up from Atlanta as well. It was certainly a pleasure meeting Chuck. Seeing the larger Parsell & Weed that he brought along too certainly helped me clarify a few things on my smaller scale model so that was a plus.

Vanity video taken by my wife:

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgcFqi5ZsxY" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgcFqi5ZsxY</a>

Noisy 5 gal compressor!  I experimented to see if 20# CO2 tank would work (silently).  Has the pressure but not the volume, so that experiment failed.

Here's another I liked:

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxr2lyTNTN8" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxr2lyTNTN8</a>

I was surprised that a boiler would be allowed at a show, but as the exhibitor said, pressure is only 15 PSI.  The little hypocycloid reduction gear has a 40:1 ratio.

Thanks Kurt, that is a great video of you and the Joy Valve engine. I suspect in a larger show setting the boiler might not have been allowed. Still it was an interesting display. Thanks for adding these.

A Model Engine Show in Pendelton? Wonderful.  I noticed a mention of it last year and as I live 60 miles from Pendelton I planned to go and marked my calendar.

As the time got closer I checked the address and it didn't make sense.  No mention where it was in location to the Pendelton Roundup Stadium or Old Town, or even Rainbow Cafe.

Only then did I realize it was not the legendary Pendelton on the Oregon Trail but one far away.  Why don't you guys bring your show out here?  We need something like that.  I bet I could get Dave Otto to attend...

Bill, the pictures are beautiful and show good detail.  Thank you for posting them.

Marvin & I have had the prototype running with the full size engine but this is absolutely the first time two (2) of these models have been running together.

The fact someone could even build a set of engines is impressive, but there is much more to the story of these Kansas City Lightning Balanced Engines that needs to be told.

Chuck built these complex engines without plans.  At that time there were no plans, only my sketches and pictures.  The fact Chuck could build such exquisite models shows his amazing skill.  Chuck is now so knowledgeable about the Lightning I have him check Dave Otto's drawings.  I have built and studied model engines all my life and seen some nice models but these are outstandingly splendid.  Thank you for doing such a great job Chuck.

Thanks Roland. Yes this Pendleton is a bit more than 60 miles from you.  Hopefully the Portland, OR show will get cranked back up this year. Thanks for your work in bringing the model of this fine engine to life.

Professor,  sorry I just pulled in.  I've had more irons in the fire than a west Texas rancher at branding time.  The show looked really nice.  I see you found me a Red Wing to drool over . DOG said be sure and remind him next year,  this may work out to be a good weekend trip for him.  Heck, we might even get old Vern  to use it as a warm up show for the pro circuit  :lolb:. Tell everybody hey.

I agree with you Larry, having more spectators would help that situation also. Having grown up in Atlanta and with family I still visit there, I know of the traffic. It was good to see you as well and I remain hopeful that this show will continue and grow larger.

Thanks Bill for the pictures. Hopefully the show will pick up momentum and grow. You never know unless you try. We have a small show up in our neck-of-the-woods (Zanesville, Ohio) and although it's attended by a great bunch of modelers it never really picked up steam with the spectators.

Yes, it's very difficult to sell craftsmanship and history to people who don't read or make anything.

As with a lot of hobbies there are events and shows that pretty much attract those interested enough to display and unless it's a well known event,  then it's pretty much a good excuse for those displaying to get together and see who built what and shoot the sh#t about it.  I've found it to be true in the antique car and motorcycle arena.  Now,  we have one of the oldest in the nation,  steam threshermans shows held just outside of Springbucket every year.  I think GWRDRIVER said he attended for a couple of years.  There is only one model builder represented,  and I have yet to catch up to the old boy.  I kinda feel bad because,  being right here at home,  I haven't tried to join in.  I'm going to post a link to the show and if anybody thinks it would work into their schedules,  I would love to host anybody wanting to attend and make it a mid summer venue.  http://www.tnkythreshermenshow.com

My brother lives in Whitehouse Tn. We try to make that show if it's not 100 deg with 90% humidity. I'll do my best to make it.
