Hydraulic Machine tool Table
« on: February 25, 2016, 01:23:21 PM »
As I look towards finding myself a suitable bigger milling machine I have noticed a slight problem: the bigger the milling machine the bigger/heavier the tooling

Some of you might remember the little challenge-et when I attempted to move my 10” rotary table off of the shelf and on to the bed of the Harrision. For those of you forget it went something like: Table at 400mm from floor, needed to slide out off the shelf and be lifted to a height of 1m. So clear the way.. bend knees properly… slide table forward off of shelf, say :censored: as it rapidly reduced the distance to the floor to zero narrowly missing any parts of my anatomy. I should mention at this point it weighs in at about 60Kgs   I did finally get it on the bed of the mill and since then it has been perched on a shelf round the back of the mill so I don’t have to try lifting it again.

Mr Silky in turn came with a little Dividing head which weighs in at 75Kgs and it sounds like I may be getting another dividing head which will weigh 65Kgs (one cannot have too many dividing heads  8) ).

So what with  :old: it was about time to buy a lifting table. Now most are expensive and big, then I found this little sweetie  ;D

Thats no good its got a couple of funny angle irons down the middle what fool would do something like that to a perfectly good lift. Needs a nice solid wooden top ;)

Problem with the scissor lifts and TEs is that you still need to get them up quite a height onto the lift, its OK for Locos that go from lift to car to steaming bay. If I ever do the Superba I'd be looking at a high lift pallet truck which go down a lot lower.

It depends if you force your ploughing engine to live outside in the cold on the floor or in the warmth of the house. In which case there is a minimum lift height equal to the door step to clear on the way into the dining room   8)

People have the room to wheel a hydraulic lift trolley around their workshop? Clearly they don't have enough machine tools.

Don't encourage her Andrew she need a cure not an excuse to buy more :lolb: I did notice another Hardinge for sale today maybe one for odd numbered days and keep silky for even numbers

Jim you could be right I think that dining room table would benifit from hydralic legs as it would make it easier to get all those casting sets on there

A 10" rotab that weighs only 60 kg?  Must not be a Troyke.   :o

I like the looks of that smaller lift table Jo, seems it is lacking a few inches though in the height direction though, or you can lower the table to its maximum height and just slide the vice/rotab onto the mill. Will it handle all the weight you need safely? With the smaller footprint its definitely going to be topheavy when extended!!

Hi Bill, yes the Harrison table only comes down to 38" and once I topped up the oil in the jack this one goes up to 36" so a 2" wooden platform is going to be added  ;)

It is not bad wheeling it around extended but safety first it will be left down when not actually lifting.

Thanks Jo. I don't recall seeing one that small over on this side of the pond. I do like that about it though. Will do some searching around just in case I should need one :)

This looks similar. Small enough footprint, even for my shop. The rotab and the 6" Kurt seem to get heavier with time. Raise this lift, lower Bridgeport table to the lift table, hmmm.

Yes same one but in red.

There is another which has cast iron wheels while mine has a solid neoprene rubber and it has a lever for letting the jack down which I was not sure about.

If you get one it is worth checking the oil level  :disappointed:

Many of the reviews did mention bleeding the hydraulic line and checking the oil.
Looks to be a much better deal in the UK. About 60 USD more expensive here.

I'd think that sheet steel on top of the wood would help the "slideability". You may also want something like:

too if you don't have one. Bigger machines will probably lead to bigger (heavier) parts  :stir:

I hear that at least one of the fellow MEM members has felt the need and brought himself one of these roller skates. He has over come the storage problem by using it as a stool for working at the lathe    not that he will let anyone take picture of him sitting on it, maybe he thinks that there is a risk that the 135 Kgs is not enough strong enough and the photo will capture him sinking slowly to the ground  :mischief:

I think if Jo adds yet more machines to her workshop the local area will start to suffer from subsidence.  I'm sure by now here workshop must be at least an inch lower in the ground than when it was built. :stir:
