2-6-0 Mixed Trafic Tender Locomotive
« on: February 09, 2016, 07:40:08 AM »
Its been some while since I started a thread, but I haven't been idle. Since getting my Simplex in Steam and doing a little tidying up work on it I've been pondering what to take on as my next long term project. I have the fancy to doing a larger tender loco, I dropped on a set of Don Young drawing for his 5" Gauge 2-6-0 Horwich Mogul otherwise known as a Crab due to its appearance. Don's drawings are beautifully detailed and have many of the features of the full sized engine, but her I hit a problem, I'm not that bothered about it being an exact scale model as long as it looks ok when its over on the far side of the track I will be happy I'm more interested in its ease of manufacture, and it being a good runner. So I will be using Dons drawings only as a guide, and will be redesigned it extensively to make it easier to make:- her are my objectives and list of constraints for the design.

Objectives:-

1:- 5" Gauge Miniature Locomotive
2:- Good Reliable Runner
3:- Extensive use
4:- Haul a minimum of 8 people
5:- Resemble a 2-6-0 Horwich Crab

Constraints:-

1:- All Features to be functional and relevant to use of a Miniature Locomotive
2:- Minimum of cast parts
3:- Make Maximum use of Don Young's design
4:- Maximum Use of laser cut parts
5:- Maximum use of commercially supplied Items (Boiler and Fittings)
6:- Simple Construction
7:- Simple and easy to maintain
8:- Transport by one person

So there we have it:-

Every project has to start some ware so I decided to start with the cylinders as I thought this would be the most difficult part to make and if I couldn't make them there was no point in taking it any further. I didn't wont to use castings I wanted to make them from a billet of cast iron, this called for a redesign of Don Young's drawing. I kept all the main critical for function features:- over all length vavle ports cylinder piston valve relationship etc, but reduce the cylinder diameter to 1 3/4" 45mm and simplified other features so that it could be made from billet.

Progress to date:-

Cutting the meehanite cast iron billet to size.

I then roughed it out on the mill and finished square using an angle plate

spotted out the cylinder and valve position using the mills DRO and located in large four jaw using a wobble bar.

Roughed out the bores.

And then set up on the cross slide and using a between centre boring bar finished the bore.

First bore done only another three to go.

That's as far as I've got.

I'll keep you posted as things progress.

Stew

I wondered where you had got to Stew and it seems I guessed right - you've been bitten by the locomotive bug!
I'll be following this build as although I have little interest in locos myself (yet) I always learn a lot from watching your work.

That's some project!
I love locos and is a major goal for why I got into this hobby.

This is going to require a lot of

Thanks for your interest chaps.

Making the cylinders from bar stock has saved me a fair bit cash as against the cost of castings that I think are extortionately priced, but it does mean I have to whittle away a fare bit of material to get them to the shape I want, but the continuous cast Meehanite cast iron is nice to machine free of blow holes and hard inclusions.

This is going to be a long term project, I'm just going to take it one part at a time with the cylinders being the biggest hurdle as they a pressing the capacity of my machines and my experience.

So far I've dropped on a set of surplus wheels from a fellow club member and I have a nearly complete tender that I picked up from the yearly club surplus auction.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with the boiler maker (Western Steam) as I'm going to deviate from Don Young,s Boiler design as I think his back head is far too complicated.

So keep watching this space.

Cheers
Stew

Hi Stew

Looking good - but a bit more info would be nice .... like - I'm guessing that the bigger bore at the bottom is the cylinder and the slightly smaller diameter is the "steam chest / valve housing" ...?

The two outer holes are most likely the "exhaust" but witch inside hole - the one by itself on one side or the oval one between the two "exhausts" ...?

Best wishes

The smaller holes are for piston valves, shaped like barbells.  The oval center hole admits steam to the center portion of the valve bore, and the steam is admitted to the cylinders by the valve opening the passages inside the valve bore.  You can see where the drill for these passages made some marks in the first photo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piston_valve_(steam_engine)

Notice that there is a single hole on the outside of the piston chamber.  This is an inspection hole that allows the valve timing to be set.  In operation it will have a screw plug.  Most US locos with piston valves I've seen have two such ports.

I'm wondering about the 4-jaw. Is the 4th jaw inside that hole? Or something else?

They sure came out looking nice.

As Kvom said the smaller hole is for the piston valve the steam goes in the central horizontal oval hole and out the two outer vertical oval holes the centre hole actually joins up to the valve port as is for a snifter valve, you can't see in the photos but there are two holes at either end of the piston bore for drain coxs this is to release trapped moisture in the cylinders to stop the hydralic lock popping off the covers.

I'm wondering about the 4-jaw. Is the 4th jaw inside that hole? Or something else?

They sure came out looking nice.

The fourth jaw is reversed you can see that better in this picture.

The valve ports are machined in a separate sleeve that is pressed into the valve bore, the valve itself is bobbin shaped I'm unsure at the moment whether to use o rings or piston rings on the bobbin I think I'm going to have a try at making piston rings this will enable a beter design of valve sleeve I'll post a progress report on this.

Thanks
Stew

One jaw reversed. Fiendishly clever. Must remember that.
