WTB Southbend Heavy 10L
« on: January 23, 2016, 03:41:42 PM »
Not sure where else to ask this here on the site.
But... I'm looking for a Southbend Heavy 10L lathe. Looking for something in the central PA region. I looked at one last night before the blizzard hit. It was in great shape with LOTS of tooling but the ways had at least a 0.040" wear !!!! So I had to pass on what looked to be a great machine. That's a lot of wear...and way too much to be useful !!
Anybody have one or know of one ?
  Thanks again,
  V 45

Mosey mentions having a SB 10 he is thinking of parting with in the opening post of his retirement lathe thread.

Thanks Cletus. I have contacted him a couple times about it. I had asked for some pics but nothing yet. I'm patient.
 Thanks again,

Pretty sure Mosey's is a 10K, not a 10L

Thanks Stan. If in good shape with tooling I'd be alright with that. Just the through hole is a lot smaller. Correct ? Still looking around as well.

One big difference is the Heavy 10 can use 5C collets. Also larger spindle bore

Sorry V45, been kinda busy. I'll try to get you some pics, but understand the lathe may be a couple of years away from going away. It is a 10K Tool Room Model A, with QC gearbox, on a South Bend cabinet bench, fully accessorized with metric transposing gears, Steady and traveling rests, face plates, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, taper attachment, gallon of matching paint, ER-32 collet set, about a dozen QCTP holders on an Aloris tool post.
I'll make a proper list someday.
It has no measurable wear on the flame-hardened ways and a new saddle feed screw nut. They will have to pry me off it when the day comes.
Now, the Derbyshire is going to go immediately. It is in beautiful shape, not one of those industrial clapped out ones from EBay. New motor and VFD.  Full sets of 3C and new 10 m/m D type collets.
So, I'll post it here first.
It will go to make room for the Sherline.

Thanks Mosey for letting me know what's going on and what you have. I'll post a pic in the workshop section of what I'm using now.
 Thanks again
