Got me a Stuart!
« on: August 24, 2012, 03:08:09 PM »
It's a 10V.  Just the castings, no bar stock or hardware.  It's much smaller than I had imagined, and I paid too much for it.  Bought it from eBay.  It's missing parts, too (top and bottom cylinder caps, piston), but that's not a big deal.  I'll make them out of brass for contrast.

I remember seeing a build for one (HMEM?) recently, so that's going to be my "tutorial" on how to make it.  I intend to substitute standard American sizes for the BA hardware, as that's what I have as far as taps and dies.  I also plan on painting it a non-standard color (oh, the horror!) because I don't particularly like the green.  I'll probably use a dark battleship grey.

Can someone point me to someplace I can find the approximate equivalent sizes for BA hardware?

The model will look better with model hex bolts, the normal stuff is just to klunky. Here are a couple of links to BA thread info.

Thank you.  The wiki page has a chart showing sizes, and from that I can infer the approximate english equivalents.  For example, 8BA ia pretty close to #2-56, and 6BA is about the size of a #4-40.

I buy hardware from one of those scale places online, the name of which escapes me at the moment.  So it's realistic enough for me.

If you click on the link BA(British Association) on the Colin Usher site there is an Excel file that has full BA data including hex size. I do not think there will be any clearance issues with the heads if you are using model hex but it does not hurt to check. I get my model hex stuff from American Model Engineering Supply.

Just a note

If you are looking for a more scale look get them with the next size down heads  i.e. a 8 BA set screw has a 9 BA head  they look much neater

they can be got that way until 10 BA and smaller

Is there a good supplier for "one size down" BA fasteners? I recently ordered some normal size ones from http://www.gwr-fasteners.co.uk, but noticed that http://www.ba-bolts.co.uk/steelnut.html do "one size down" sizes. Are there any other suppliers?

If I buy fastners and one size down heads the cheapest is EKP, who make them. They also supply many of the other model engineering companies.

Myself I make my own in stainless, and EKP are also the cheapest place to buy 303 stainless . But for my very small nuts I have found a supplier who can provide some very nice Swiss nuts (they are not cheap) but they are worth it.

Like Jo I use EKP for most of my BA fixings.

And this is a chart I made up to convert from American to BA but it can work backwards.

I usually get my BA fasteners from here - much cheaper than I can get 'em in Oz - I can get (even with the postage) about 100 screws for what I would pay for 20 here.
The older I get, the better I was.

... probably worth getting a copy of Andrew Smith's book as well - quite a lot of us cut our teeth on that and the 10V

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Building-Vertical-Steam-Engine-Castings/dp/1857610962

Don't have to buy it from there - lots of places keep it.

Harold Hall has a good 27 page build of the 10 which is basically the series he did for Model Engineer not that long ago.
