Coles Challenger V8
« on: January 18, 2016, 05:18:07 PM »
I am trying to help out a set of Orphan castings for a Coles Challenger V-8 and they have been asking so nicely to move in with us for the last few months that I have a tendency to say yes, despite my promise not to buy any more casting sets :embarassed:

The problem I have is that I am told that this includes the set of castings for the Overhead Valve conversion but long ago the drawings for this conversion has been lost :wallbang: it would be such a shame not to have the option to build it with the conversion if the full set of castings are with it.

So could someone see if they could identify the Overhead conversion castings in amongst these. And can anyone point me to a source of drawings for the conversion :)

From a purely engine viewpoint the two castings under the sparkplugs are the side valve heads, the two troughs are the rocker covers for an OHV engine and the two slanted castings are the OHV heads  :headscratch:

It's not a "proper" V8 though, is it? It has a flat (rather than star) crank and so won't make a suitably V8-ish noise.

That alone should make for a further 50% discount, because you'll have to scrap the crankshaft and make a proper one, and then work out the new cam lobe angles to get the right firing order...

Mike, maybe you could also talk Jo into putting a supercharger on the top  :mischief:

Jo, Coles is still around and they still list that model. Send them an email they might be able to point you in the right direction. Their website link is:

I beleive the engine comes with the drawings for the flathead version its the OHV conversion drawings Jo is lacking which were not something coles did.

I have all of the Coles (Lancer) drawings for the Challenger what is missing is identification of those third party overhead valve castings and their associated drawings.

Jo what do you mean by no joy? They couldn't offer any information or that you didn't get any response at all?

Still waiting  :-\

I did find one picture of what is a similar OHV conversion. But my guess is that if I use the OHV conversion I would not need those nice  intake and exhaust manifolds done by Steve H  :noidea:
