Yogi's take on a Duclos Gearless
« on: December 20, 2015, 03:33:49 PM »
Hello everyone,

I think it's time to introduce my current project: A Duclos Gearless Hit 'n Miss engine.
As always, we can't just build an engine to plans, it needs to be modified. The biggest difference to the original design is, it'll be about 25% larger. And then there are some other minor changes you'll see along the way...

Some of the key dimensions:
Bore 25 mm
Stroke 36 mm
Flywheels 160 mm

Well, lets get started with the cylinder... enjoy

That's a nice start.  What kind of mandrel is that holding the cylinder in the last two pictures?

Hi Yogi,
Nice work on your cylinder.  And a great job on the pictures too. Those are very crisp and well done!

Chuck, Don called it, its an expanding mandrel. They are very handy to have in your toolbox, specially for those odd holding setups. They are also very accurate.

Regards,
Yogi

The "Gearless" is a nice engine, with a fascinating mechanism for opening the exhaust valve on every other revolution of the crankshaft. I built a working model of just the valve mechanism last year and posted about it on this forum.---Brian

Up next, the cylinder head.

The parts haven't been deburred yet, when I took the pictures.... Lots of edges to deburr...   ;)

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

Up next, we have the crank shaft.
Its the built up variety. The thing to note about this crank shaft is the crank pin, which is a needle bearing inner ring. Needle bearing inner rings are hard and precision ground, making an ideal crank pin.
It being a built up crank shaft, the big end bearing will be a needle bearing. I don't have any pictures of the machining, but here a shot of the test fit.
We'll come back to it in more detail after the connecting rod is done and we'll do the final assembly.
