Chuck finger: A Cletus style survey
« on: December 07, 2015, 07:59:16 PM »
I am just curious as to how many experience the dreaded "chuck finger" , you know,  when you are filing or polishing on the lathe,  something grabs,  something slips,  and bam,  the index finger,  usually on the right hand comes into a brief,  blunt contact with a chuck jaw. Does this ever happen to anyone other than myself,  and if so, what is your favorite expression to mutter when it does.  Hey, I'm just killing time  :lolb: :lolb:.

Yes Rob, I say something very similar to that, perhaps embellished just a little.

 :pics:

A pic of the offense would be helpful.

I usually catch a knuckle.

Expressions sometimes start with 'Crap!' when I'm able to know it happened before the pain sets in.
If the pain sets in before awareness then it's usually a form of 'Crap!'.
From there it depends on how much pain sets in.
I've not reached the level of expression that signifies loss of functionality - thank goodness.
But I've developed enough range of expression to create a chart of expression vs pain with decent resolution.
None of which are printable.

Another interesting question may be 'do you fine certain expressions express different offenses?'.

I generally reserve 'rats' for the more benign.

Great responses guys. I'll admit,  today it happened.  I had a 4.25" piece of Durabar in the 8" four jaw and the jaws were extended quite a bit.  I had to turn a 2.5"  long section down to .750" ( a helluva lot of turning and chips ) . Upon dimension,  I turned the RPMs up to about 800 for a final polishing and was  tickled to be spot on in size and producing a mirror finish  ( meaning I was having too much fun ) and BOOM, it slipped; index finger tip jammed  and bounced off of jaw.  Now,  at 800 RPMs  I am thinking more than one jaw . No blood was drawn, however,  I yelled out about sons of female dogs and  Marv, I added "You stupid" to your comment.  And I mean folks,  it hit dead on the end , so,  there may have even been some references to incest made  :mischief:, hey, I'm an old redneck.  Here's the funny part : after all the fussing and cussing,  while trying to take my mind off of the sting,  I mic'd and admired the part and forgot all about it : until I typed this,  damn,  that finger is sore  :lolb:.

I haven't hurt myself, but I have scared myself. I am very careful with my hands around the chuck, but I have had the spinning chuck touch the back of my knuckles. It doesn't make me swear, but it certainly makes me aware of the potential danger in getting hands to close to spinning machinery!!! It also happens when I am holding a strip of carborundum cloth against a part to take off the final .001" of material and leave a good finish.

Hi guys,
As yet, touching a LARGE LUMP OF WOOD...aka the top of the head, I haven't done it yet, although Brains reference to carborundum paper did bring back the pain!
What will I say on the day  :censored: :censored: :censored:

Just an aside has anybody heard the workshop gnome snigger when we do something stupid, or the machinery laugh? or is it just me.......from one of the training days years ago, the guy taking it said "you all have Igor's in your heads, just some are more vocal than others!" Mine yells & screams all the time!   :lolb:

First of all, buy some .875 durabar and use a 3' length of abrasive cloth.
Generally, it rhymes with "another trucker."

A similar problem occurs on the opposite end of the scale when using 5C collets on the lathe. I know, nothing to worry about because nothing sticks out of the collet to attack your finger. So there you are with the lathe  cranked wide open polishing a valve stem of 5/32 or so that is right next to the collet. nothing to worry about of course because nothing is sticking out of the collet to catch your finger BUT I tend to forget that something sticks out of my finger called a fingernail. Fingernail acts like dog clutch as it engages one of the slots on the collet face. Most of the time the result is just a close manicure, but sometimes it tries to relocate the fingernail up to the second finger joint.

Since colllets are small I tend to use small words to rename or talk to them. Most of these words only have four letters.

Wow. A turntable.
How many of our children know what that is?

Surprisingly my youngest bought a turntable. I have no idea why. Some dumb remark about the sound being better. Really? Hisses and pops? Skips and warps?

In any case, she and her betrothed came by and absconded with many of my 33's. Even some 66's. And a few 45's.

They are thieves until they return them.  :cussing:

I miss my 8-track.

[EDIT] 66's? What is that? Doofus. You meant 78's.

I must admit to being very careful but occasionally tap a knuckle while polishing something to size. Usually at the long end of the emery cloth. I'd say that the flowery terminology I use at that point in time rhymes with "wham" and usually has something to do with a female dog :cussing:. I've heard all those stories about guys putting files into their fore arms so I am very careful with a file.

About turn tables;  one evening a few years back we had some visitors at the museum, I set up a portable wind up gramophone, and left it playing, some time later one of the visitors, a kid about ten years old came up to a group of use and asked about the music thing, is that an old fashioned CD player? Bit of a think, weeell yeees, I suppose you could call it that. Then the workings of the gramophone got explained.  The kids had never seen a record before, and these were 78s, mostly from the 1950s,  they thought it was neet that you could play music, and no electricity/electronics required.

I have not yet injured myself on a metal working machine, however at 15 in a woodworking class, I stuck my right middle finger into a sanding disk on the outboard end of a woodturning lathe. I cried out a common variation of 'pooh', which was unheard of in such a decorous school. Like Woodstock, there are so many people that were there that day, who just were not! The evidence is still very clear on my finger. Hugh.

Reminds me of an old song.

I placed my finger in the Woodpeckers hole,
And the Woodpecker said, "God bless my Soul,"
Take it out, take it out, take it out,
Remove it!

I'm sure many of you who served in the British Armed Forces will know the rest. I of course am too much the gentleman to continue.
