using a drive plate for a back plate
« on: December 07, 2015, 07:56:12 PM »
I finally got myself that 4 jaw independent chuck I have been wanting since I got my Colchester.

Now it have come to my attention that what I thought was an extra back plate, in fact was a drive plate, so my question, will the drive plate be any good as a back plate, it seems beefy enough, and I am never going to use it at it's original purpose.

In my time as a apprentice I learned how to turn between centres with a piece of axle in the chuck, turned with a 60 degree point, and the 3 jaw as a drive plate.
The L1 long taper back plate on the Colchester is not that common.
