What drum switch?
« on: November 28, 2015, 08:48:10 AM »
I have a small motor with four wires coming out red, yellow, black & earth, it also has a capacitor with two wires, the motor runs forward with the capacitor to the red & rev to the yellow. I found a drum switch but dont know if it is the right one, so some advice is needed.

Drum switches are common on older Myford lathes but they should be wired with a start/stop contactor as well to meet safety standards.

Cowells fit to their lathes two controls: a normal two pole Forward/reverse switch and a start/stop (contactor).

Thanks jo, I was going to fit a big red stop button as well just didnt mention that, but I wanted a stop before reverse for the motors sake.

My switch gear uses a 3 button switch, top forward, middle off, bottom backward, the drum switch to me seems obsolete, and you still need an on off switch.

For a small motor your drum switch will work fine. I think there have been posts on the forum showing the wiring for your motor and switch. If you don't find any, send me a PM with e-mail address and I will send you a diagram.
