Back gear help
« on: November 26, 2015, 11:50:51 AM »
I got a Cowells 90 lathe yesterday & was looking at the back gear, I can see how to engage it but how do you release the gear to operate it? I have been after a good Cowells for quite a while, but they are so expensive & you need it well equipped. Mine is well equipped but needs a tail stock chuck, so if any of you have a spare or know where to obtain one at a realistic price please let me know!

Dear Peter.

I notice in your photo above you already have a Jacobs style chuck, perhaps a chat with Chester machine tools about a suitable arbour would help? They also carry a range of Vee belts and NVR switches.

I'm a bit biased but shop around, perhaps even try the despised ebay!!

Kind regards, Graham.

As you say that looks nicely kitted out and the tobacco tins give a good idea of the size  :)
Best regards

The Cowells taper is a short 0MT (the wrong end to make use of commercial 0MT ones :ShakeHead:)

The Vee belt is a standard sewing machine belt, I think 6mm  but once you get the book will tell you the sizes (the toothed Cowells ones are very good/expensve). Mine cost me a lot less than £10 delivered  ;) The lengh of the rear belt will depend on where you mount the motor.

That is a capacitor start and run motor. Do you have the capacitor for it?

11mm on the small end, 12.4 on the large end of the taper & the taper is 27.5 long, any one know what this is?

Dear Peter.

Try this.  http://littlemachineshop.com/reference/tapers.php

As for std arbours just take a saw to it!! There was one machine in the Chester range that had a short arbour requirement I used to prepare batches of short stub on a regular basis.

Cheers Graham.

Hi Graham, i checked out the taper charts and nothing seemed to mach up with mine and for the 0mt short according to Jo who has a Cowells lathe you need the small end of the taper so it doesn't seem like the saw would do the trick, sadly.
but thank you very much for the help,
Peter

It looks like your taper may be an extended B12. It should be Large end 12,065mm Small end 11,1mm Length 18,5mm Extending this to 27.5 mm gives a large end of 12.48mm with a small end of 11mm.

Can you beg or borrow a B12 taper chuck to try?
Best regards

Roger

Hi there,

Looks like you had a good buy, lots of goodies with it.  I had seen that one on Ebay a few days ago.  I bought mine as an Ebay purchase early last year and have been very pleased with it.  In fact it is just about to have a present of a set of DRO's fitted based on the Magnetic read heads sold by Allendale, and using the Yuri's Toys Android package Touch-DRO as the display console.  I am trying to get up courage to drill the carriage for the mountings at the moment.

I'm sure you will have fun with it.

Regards,

Colin

thank you roger, that sounds right.

Yes Colin that was my lathe, I have just rough wired the motor up and it worked, it was turning the wrong way but a two second fix. I got all the items shown in the pic plus two other boxes with useful bits in. sadly no drill chuck or live centre.

Don't waste your money on a live centre  :hellno: In the small stuff a fixed centre works well and it doesn't get in the way.

I've only got those two  :headscratch: three drill chucks, the two Cowells  supplies plus a cheapy Chinese  ::) chuck with a home made taper fitted.

I think three is to many even for you, I think you should find a new home for the cheapy Chinese one with the home made taper, I am sure some one out there who hasnt got one chuck might be willing to buy it :naughty:

 :o That's a big one.

I would look to get yourself a 0 to 4mm drill chuck for the tailstock and a larger 6.35mm one.
