Anson winter closing weekend.
« on: October 27, 2015, 03:44:07 PM »
Dear All.

We spent a wonderful Sunday at the Anson Engine museum, my two sons and I playing with some of my larger toys that now live there.

One of the younger volunteers made a few short videos of my models and two of my Listers.

All the models shown are the original first prototype and still running nicely after 25 years of public events.

The RLE dragsaw was built around the first engine, No 103 ( 1987 ) in 2000 and has turned quite a few heads!!

Thanks for those Graham, good to see the old engines still work and the Gardner and Robinson in particular have gathered a nice patina over the years. Also a glimpse or two of the IF Allman in the background ;)

Funny enough I was sent a couple of photos of you RLE on its drag saw recently by another member so good to see that in action to.

J

PS I hear that Retlas casting set has found a new home.

Good to see those engines running Graham. Has there ever been a gathering or rally specifically for Alyn Foundry engines?

Dear All.

Many thanks for the comments I particularly liked Jason's, substituting the word patina for, dare I say it, neglect ?  :)  I wish I had a £1.00 for every stroke of the Gardner's piston, I'd be quite rich !! It has gone through 3 sets of piston rings in it's lifetime and is now on a single " Viton " O ring which seems to have worked very well.

Dear Andy.

A name synonymous with the older northern rally goers, Percy Gallimore and I discussed on many occasions a small power engine rally. Anything would go so long as it was under, or rated at 1 HP !!
Percy has a collection of well over 100 small power engines of various descriptions, sadly old father time keeps whittling away the days and I think a Small power engine rally will remain a pipe dream.

Alyn Foundry produced nearly 1000 kit's, all the different models added together, so yes you could have a show however it would be a little repetitive IMO........... Rather like a Lister D type rally !!  :)

Kind regards, Graham.

Sound like just enough for a miniature 1000 engine rally or Mini Miglia ;)

Good grief, nearly 2 years ago!

Well, next Saturday/Sunday the 28/29th marks the closing of the Anson Engine museum for 2017.

I’m hoping to add another engine to the museums collection of models thanks to Andy’s ( Chipmaster ) help. He found a little foundry that does small batches and one-off’s but at reasonable cost. He passed on the master pattern for my Robinson Hot air engine cylinder a couple of weeks ago and with the help of Chester Machine tools I hope to have some new Iron to play with later today.

I hope to be attending the event on Sunday and look forward to meeting any of the enthusiasts able to visit.

I’m off to the supermarket now to see if I can find a suitable can of something to make the displacer piston from. The Tuna fish tins of old seem to have been downsized from 185g to 160g not quite enough displacement volume!

Cheers Graham.

Hi Graham,

Looking forward to meeting up with you next Sunday at the Anson. Will you be taking any of your engines again? Would love to see the Robinson running.

Hi Ray.

Yes indeed, in fact there will be 3 half scale type “ X “ engines running, he says “ tongue in cheek “  :)

The Anson inherited Vincent’s engine along with a couple of other models, these others haven’t been seen by many so I’m hoping to share some pictures with the community next week.

I loaned all of my models to the museum some years back the only one still in my possession is the quarter scale Hornsby Akroyd that’s become a rather nice looking “ doorstop “ !

Cheers Graham.

Hi graham

Thank you for the heads up about the an son open day but I have a question, will yours and vincents models be on display and I would love to see them again as I didn't get my hit and miss fix at the midlands show.

If there's going to be plenty of models on show I may well take a run up on Sunday

Best wishes jonathan

Hi Jonathan.

I would think so, yes.  All my model engines are there bar the Hornsby Akroyd, which needs some attention. Also Geoff has been acquiring the odd model from other sources as time has progressed.

It's a lively event with many of the larger engines running and I believe the Stott mill engine will also be in steam as well. Apart from that there are the wood bodgers and blacksmiths beavering away, plenty of diverse entertainment.

Cheers Graham.

Hello All.

Well that wraps things up for the year, all the engines drained down and made safe from winters icy grasp.

Great to meet Ray and Ian and put faces to names. Looking forward to your input on the Robinson from rejects thread!   ;)

This twit in his haste forgot the camera but I know Ray took some photographs, Ray if you're reading please attach those " Special " ones when able ?   ;)

See you in the Spring, cheers Graham.

I also went upto the anson yesterday and had a very enjoyable day,  I haven't been there for quite awhile and it's changed alot, the steam room is great and it was nice to see vincents models.

I did see you graham but it was late on and you were very busy sat trying to get a little hot tube model running, I take it the young lad who was pulling the flywheel over was your son? I bet he's got a sore wrist today.

Ray were you the gentleman sat on the chair by the models?

I did take some pics

Hi Jonathan.

I’m sorry I missed you, please post some photos it’ll give the folks here a glimpse of what the Anson is about.

Yes that was Mathew, middle son. He’s pretty used to hand cranking by now!

Cheers Graham.

Hi Graham and Jonathan.Just got back from the Anson trip, via Engineer's Emporium to collect a new flywheel for the Otto, so not had a chance to sort out photos and video yet. Will try and get some on the forum in the next day or so.
Really enjoyed meeting you and your sons Graham and great to see some of the engines running, especially the Penultimate! Don't forget to PM me with your address so that I can send you a disc with the photos and video on. I was really impressed with Vincent's engines. He must have been a really skilled chap.
Not sure which person you saw Jonathan but I was the bearded one with glasses sitting on a chair videoing Graham  and his sons on the floor trying to get a hot tube vertical running (successfully).

I like that, not so sure about the carpet!

Is it a freelance design?

Hi Jason.

The Penultimate was my first design, look at my avatar, engine number 103.

The engine in the video was built by Dave Lister if my memory is correct. He used the Sphinx/Robinson " Star " wheel as a diversion.

We sold a very small number of them, very early on.

Cheers Graham.

Ray- yes it was you I saw sat on the chair, I heard you talking about your half horse stuart and it wasn't until I was driving home that I remembered you had one and that it was you.

Jason- the new toys coming home sounds great!!!! Do you have a video of the vertical yet?

A few photos for you all to enjoy. I am sure Graham might wish to comment on one or two of them. There are quite a few so I will post them in several batches.
I am just processing the video at the moment and will add a clip shortly.

Hi Ray.

Many thanks for the photographs. Vincent’s Crossley trio, two finished and one under construction were started over 10 years ago.

His half scale Petter “ M “ two stroke was all in Aluminium except for a glued in cast Iron cylinder liner. He made all the patterns and castings himself using a wood fired furnace.

It’s amazing that a horticulturist and amazing flower arranger was so adept at mechanical engineering.

Great to meet you and please check tomorrow’s post....  ;)

Cheers Graham.

Thanks Graham. Decided to repair Otto crank a different way in the end as the  joint was so contaminated with oil that solder probably wouldn't have worked - see my Otto thread - but I will soon have a Robinson crank to make, won't I?

Feel free to skip about a bit, and for Jason a rather pernickety Penultimate finally gave in to it's creator !!   ;)

Cheers Graham.
