Strange Pump Mechanism
« on: September 22, 2015, 02:46:52 PM »
A few days ago I received the following link to a You Tube video showing an engine operating a pump.  Have a look at the mechanism activating the pump.  Fascinating.  It seems to be changing gear ratio on every revolution.

Looks like it gives a lower gear ratio as the pump is under load lifting the water and then shifts to a higher gear to lower the unloaded ram faster ready for the next lift.

Similar sort of principal to teh eliptical chain rings you find on bikes that give the best ratio when you have your leg in the most powerful part of the stroke.

Now who fancies cutting a set of gears liek that :)

That is neat Vince. Here's another video of one from a slightly different angle.

It certainly is a goofy looking gear set-up. Brings back a memory though, of the first power operated well pump that I ever seen. When I was a kid, back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, it was my job every night after school to split a couple of blocks of hardwood, carry it into the house to fill the woodbox, and pump two pails of water. I went somewhere with my dad, and a fellow had rigged up a hit and miss engine with an eccentric to raise and lower the pump handle. I was about 10 years old, and thought that it was the most magical thing I had ever seen.---Brian
