If you are in the USA, you can order them from www.mscdirect.com. I suspect ENCO has them too.

It will be helpful if you have your location in your profile. You'll get more accurate responses.
As Bill said, Enco, MSC, McMaster, Travers, etc.
The ¼-40 is a very standard tap stocked virtually everywhere.

Thanks Bill
I did find the tap in the MSC blue book, but not the die. I have an older book, so probably should update.

Search for 1/4"-40 die and it should pop up. They will be pricier that the PMR ones but if you are mainly doing things like brass tubing, the PMR's should be fine. That may even be where I got mine, been so long I don't recall now.

Logger, if you go to your forum profile settings, you can add it under "personal text" or alternately under the signature box. Mine is shown as entered in the personal text box.

I cant figure out how to get into the settings. I click onto my name and all I get is the number of posts ive participated in and a place for my age which wont even let me enter it. Any drop down menue I get only gives me the option to change my email or my password. Is it because im using my phone through tapatalk?

Along the top of the page you get - Home, Help, Search, Profile, etc

Click Profile, then account settings from the drop down

You then get an orange tap "Modify profile" select "forum profile" from that

Well I think I finally figured it out. I had to do it on the tapatalk site not on the individual forums. Found it by accident. Hope it worked.

Hi

This is just an FYI from personal experience.  I have just started to need to replace taps and dies after 30-40 years of use.

If you have not purchased the set yet I suggest you call the supplier and ask for country of origin.  The last three dies (6-32, 10-32, and 5-40) I purchased about year or so ago were all in the $15 - $18 range and came  from China  ( from a supplier mentioned above).  None of them would start a thread on a shaft.  I returned all but the 6-32 as I needed it immediately to make some 2 " long bolts.  My old dies from the 40's and 50's would start a thread but were very dull.  I ended up starting the thread with the old die and finishing with the new one with lots of lubricant.  I then decided to spend some $$ and for $38 - $45. I got dies that cut metal like butter.  So as usual you get what you pay for.  I should have known better as I do get the best (based on my usage experience) drill bits, and lathe/mill tooling.

Now I am sure lots of China tooling works just fine, but at this point for me I will take a pass.

So I am going to learn how to sharpen my old ones or pony up $$.

100% agree. I've had very nice results with Japanese taps and dies. Also, all of the taps and dies from McMaster have generally been Made in USA and cut beautifully. The Chinese stuff sometimes is just fine and sometimes aggravating.
Best,
Stan
