.0001" or Wood Overlay
« on: September 01, 2015, 08:25:53 PM »
I need some clarification.  Back in the 70's down here in the South,  I was taught that an instrument that was graduated to .0001 was called vernier and it was pronounced "Vern-yar" . In the 80's I worked with some young engineers that added : "Vern-e-yar" , and now I hear almost everyone saying "Verneer" , like the beautiful wood overlay. Is it generational,  regional, or my ignorance? . . Just one of those things that make you go "Hmm "

Pure ignorance.

It is one of my pet peeves when someone calls a vernier caliper a "vuneer".  It is even worse when they call a dial caliper or a digital caliper a vernier or "vuneer".

We pronounce it "Vernyer" up here. And to be truthful, while "Vernier" really only applies to the old style caliper with a Vernier scale on it, the term has almost become generic, to include both dial type  and digital calipers.---Brian

Verniers provide a way of subdividing a small interval on a scale where that interval is too small to be seen reliably.  I have a vernier on my height gauge as well as a protractor.

When I was at Westlands in the seventies it was referred to as a "very near" gauge. :)

I have a nice vernier mic to get down to 0.0001's. With my skill I am lucky to get to 0.1s!

Another reason we'll never let Canada join the Union. :-)

Vern, I bring it out in him. Actually, I think there may be some underlying traces of Redneck in the family tree. Remember what I told you about the BBQ  :LittleDevil: :lolb: :lolb:

I'll add Canada to the list of nations from which I am banned.  Sadly though, it will have to go in volume three.
