Just a reminder that there are single and double acting airbrushes. Double action allows control of both air and paint volume and should allow for somewhat heavier application rates.

Wow! I've somehow missed a lot! I don't want to miss anything. To much to learn.

Awesome, Kim.

Before I assembled everything there was ONE more paining thing I wanted to do. I wanted to add a red highlight to the flute in the connecting rod. I debated about it for a while - I was very worried that I’d completely botch the paint job if I tried an advanced concept like this. But I figured the worst thing that could happen is I’d have to strip the paint and start over. So I went for it.

Here’s my masking job:

The multi-phase application of red paint:

And (after a few days of drying) the final product:

Not too bad for a rank beginner at painting. I’m pleased :)

So, now I begin the long process of re-assembling all the parts, and hopefully getting them to fit together correctly!

After a few hours of work, here’s where I’m at:

Something else that is making this take a long time is I’m cutting gaskets for all the steam tight fittings. Slow, but its important!

And during assembly, of course, I came across another piece I should have painted red. So, I got that started. Good thing I didn't take down my cardboard paint booth yet! Hopefully it will be dry by the time I need it.

We’re getting very close!

Thanks for sticking with me through the bitter end :)

Looking good Kim, the boiler and frame is especially nice!

On small parts that are easy to hang, and getting painted with a rattle can, I will use a piece of welding rod to make a hanger. Then walk outside and spray the part, bring it back inside if it is too cold, and hang it up in the shop where it can dry. I pretty much never paint in the shop as I don't want any over spray on my tools and stuff.

Thanks Thomas and Dave!

Dave, sounds like a great suggestion! I should give that a try. My problem is that in this area, for much of the year, you'd get rain splats on your newly sprayed paint if you did it outside. Even if you brought it in. It just kinda drizzles all winter around these parts. But, I wouldn't have that problem right now - its beautiful out there! last gasp before the winter overcast sets in I think :)

I understand; I spent 3 months working in Corvallis in 1996, September, October, and November. I kid that the day we got there it was beautiful sunshine, the next day it clouded up and began to rain; didn't stop the whole time we were there! :lolb:

Thanks Bill!

I got the steam cylinder assembled and working today. Here’s a short video I took to prove I have it working on air again. It works both directions too :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb1wXm1xusM

The ugly blue tape is there to help keep me from dining up my nice new paint job!

Also, I put the piece of Plexiglas in for the steam chest cover to make it easier to set the timing of the D-valve. But now I need to swap it for the Brass steam chest cover. I don’t think the Plexiglas would survive the steam very well.

Well, I did it! I finally completed my model of the Steam Tractor.

Here’s the teaser shot:

I’ve posted a bunch of beauty shots in the Show Case section. I’ve included a link here to keep the two connected: http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php?topic=8560.new#new

The only thing I have left is to hook up the pressure gauge. Turns out I was missing a fitting for that. So after a quick stop at Ace HW this week, I should be able to get that on and then I may fire it up and go for steam!

Part of me wants to never fire it up – I’m afraid steam will get it all sooty and messy. But then, the bigger part of me wants to see it steam... just once! :)

Anyway, that big adventure still awaits. But I’m calling the work complete.

Thank you all for all the help you’ve provided me on this build over the past 3+ years. Hard to believe its been that long, but it has.

On to bigger and better things!
Thank you again!

Well done, Kim, that is a real beauty, you must be very proud to see it reach this stage. And it's has been a really helpful and informative thread all the way. Probably seems longer to you, but each post is eagerly awaited.

Looking forward to seeing it in steam.
