And for things that get hot, (like the boiler casing), I'm wondering if I need special paints?  Or maybe it won't get THAT hot.  Or maybe I really won't run it that much :)

Perhaps it already exists but I wouldn't mind seeing a thread on paints, types, uses, recommendations, etc. A lot of people have that knowledge that must be shared! Large subject I'm sure. Maybe start out with Kim's question regarding heat.

An excellent idea, Zee!!  I haven't looked at paints in that regard for about 30 years now and I'm probably way behind in what's available these days...

Thanks for the thoughtful comments Zee, Thomas and Zee!

It would be very helpful to hear more about paint types and such.  Let see if we can get that started!

Here’s my update of yesterday’s shop session.

There were a few things left to finish up the Canopy.

First, I filed & sanded down the wood blocks that are the receivers for the canopy supports, then drilled appropriate holes in them, as can be seen in this photo:

Next, I cut out some sheet metal for the end plates.  I double sticky taped the two pieces together and filed them to shape.

After drilling holes for the fasteners, I separated the parts and cleaned them up.  Here are the completed end plates:

I used CA to glue them onto the canopy, then glued the little brass nails I’ve been using for rivets in the holes to look like bolts heads or rivets or some kind of fasteners.

Here’s the finished canopy sitting atop the mostly disassembled tractor:

Following this, I spent the rest of my shop time making up some shelves for my shorter bar stock.  This has been my plan for months, I just haven’t gotten around to it till now.  Hopefully this will make it easier to tell what I’ve got on hand!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look.
Kim

Looks great Kim!

I need to do some more work in the storage department for the small pieces.

For the last few weeks I’ve been painting. Not my favorite job, but one that needs to be done.

Based on the excellent feedback, I found some Rust-oleum High Temp paint at my local Home Depot.  Since I was going with the Rust-oleum, I picked up a few other paints just to stay in the same family.  I got the High Temp black, primer white, Green and Red.   I got matte finish, since that seemed to be more prototypical. These will be the color for my tractor.

I started with the black (which didn’t need primer) and then primed all the parts that were NOT going to be black (because they did need primer).  Didn’t get a picture of the black being painted, but here’s one of the early coats of primer.

I tend to get too excited and get the paint on too thick.  I try so hard to hold back and say “many thin coats.”  But somehow, I don’t listen to myself and I still get blobs and runs that have to be sanded out and then re-primed.  But I stuck with it and think I ended up with an OK finish.

Here’s a shot of the red batch.  Made all the wheels red.  This seemed to be a common theme in many of the pictures of Case Tractors I was able to find.

With the paining complete, here’s all the High Temp black parts:

The green parts:

And the red parts:

And last, but not least, the huge pile of non-painted parts.

If that leaves too much not painted I may have to go back and work it over again. But this seemed like a reasonable compromise to me.  Guess we’ll see.  Because the next step is to re-assemble the whole thing!

Hello Kim,

Colors look real good and it always seems to bring "things" together. The unpainted parts should highlight everything else.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Looks great Kim. It should be very eye catching once assembled. I'll see if I can find the artwork I did for the logos when I redid my engine. I printed them on store bought decal paper.

Thanks Thomas, Pete, George, and Don,

I'm quite excited to get this thing across the finish line.

I've sure learned a lot, but am ready for my next challenge  ;)
