Large Steady Rest for a 9X20
« on: August 16, 2012, 05:02:37 PM »
In order to turn a crankshaft for an engine I am building I needed a larger Steady Rest than the one supplied with the lathe. I fabricated this one from 7075 Al, 303 SS and brass. It is hard anodized black.

Goodness me Bill, that is nearly as big as your lathe.

But if it does the job you require it to do, then it is perfect.

Nice work. :NotWorthy:

Kind words are always appreciated, thank you. It will hold stock from .375 dia. up to 3.125 dia. The stock SR that came with the lathe would barely go above 1.250.

Now that is big.  Is that for the radial engine?

Yes it is for the P&W 1830. It needed to be this big as the "Cat Head" is an offset type with a major dia. of close to 3.00 inches. I really need to get back to that project. It has been some time since I last worked on it.

You can't really tell the mass of this rest. Here this should give you a good idea.

Thanx Dave. It has to be as it will be steadying a piece of 4140 2.5 in. dia.X 14 in. long. The offset center will be 27 mm on both sides of "0". Slow speed only here.
