Mike, a new member from the UK
« on: July 16, 2015, 10:08:36 PM »
Hello to you all

May I introduce myself. My name is Mike but I use the tag Vixen. I am a happily retired retired professional engineer. I may be new to this forum but I am not new to model engineering. I have been at it in one form or another since I found the key to Dad's toolbox when I was a young lad. I now have a reasonably well equipped workshop of my own, with mostly CNC machines. They help keep the mind active and the keyboard is easier on my arthritic fingers and hands than a set of handwheels.

I have always had a keen interest in I/C engines. I used to tune my own race engines and now build model engines from scratch. I built a pair of 9 cylinder Bristol Mercury supercharged radial engines in 1/4 scale over a period of about 12 years and have just started on a pair of 1/3 scale Mercedes Benz W165 Grand Prix engines from 1939. The last of the legendary 'Silver Arrows'. They may take just as long to complete. Thats not important, for me it's the journey that matters, not the destination.

Mike,
Welcome aboard, I have to admit that I love the sound of a radial running. The MB w165 wasn't that a supercharged v12? I look forward to seeing some photos.

Don't forgot to mention your Ploughing Engine  , your engine cylinder sat on your desk at work when I was a lass is one of the reasons I now make models myself  8)

Hi Mike, and welcome to the forum. I'm impressed by the way the cylinder is attached to the boiler, and also how the boiler would appear to be held together!

You've had a lot of interesting projects in your life, and I look forward to hearing more about them.

Cheers, Hugh.

I discovered a long time ago that model engineering and in particular model engine making is highly infectious. This condition can last a lifetime and there is no known cure. The only known palliative is more stock metal and fine castings.
Over the years I have built many models, a number of engines and produced lots of swarf. Swarf mostly.
I hope to post information on some of these projects over the coming months (years?).
I will start off soon, with my current and ongoing project the 1/3 scale model of the 1939 supercharged 1.5 litre Mercedes Benz W165 Grand Prix engine

Good to see you here Mike and I look foprward to seeing what is going on inside those superchargers.

Is that a 3" 16nhp engine?
