Some of my projects
« on: August 13, 2012, 09:09:01 PM »
With Bogs and his merry crew shepherding this forum I expect it to have a lifetime and vitality not often seen in such venues.  That thought has encouraged me to collect some of my efforts and put them up so they will be available when I'm no longer around.

Most of these models were completed in the days before electronic cameras and the internet so there  are no build logs, only photos of completed projects.  If you want more detailed pictures of any of the models, let me know and I'll take some.

Given the number of pictures and videos, I'm not going to write any commentary.  If you have questions, ask and I'll attempt to answer them.

First some air, vacuum and steam engines...

There are a few other engines but I haven't photographed them yet.

And now for some Stirlings...

and, finally, a few non-engine projects

I remember many of them too. Very nice collection.

I sometimes think about the time you talked about that first one...carrying it in your pocket.
It runs on lung power too doesn't it?

Yes, that's my get-free-stuff engine.  When the salesman asks, "What are you going to do with the ----?", I show him that working and he's often enthralled enough to offer the needed item for free.

Hi Marv,Can you tell me what the pully between the ropes on your rope drive engine is for and how it works. Great collection of engines to be proud of. Regards Keith.

What's the clear one with the wires sticking out?

Do you have more pics or the one with the unusual flywheel crank?  It is it a twin cylinder?

Where did you find plans for the little beam?  Is it one of Elmer's designs?

Keith,

Rope had a tendency to swell when it was damp, thus inviting slipping of the drive.  The idler pulley you see automatically takes up the slack.  It's attached to the hanging weight which pulls on it constantly and this, in turn, keeps tension on the main drive rope.

When I show this engine I always seem to get the same questions.  No, the grooves in the flywheel and the driven pulley are not thread-forms, they are parallel grooves.  Yes, the rope is a single loop, just like the chain on your bicycle.

It's a fluidyne Stirling.  The wires attach to a power resistor that is used to heat the water.

I'm not sure which one you mean.  Chuck Fellows' hit 'n miss air engine?

It's one of Bill Lindsey's designs.  Its interesting motion captivated me.

That's a fantastic collection Marv!

I love the machine shop and tools. Does the shaper have a claper?

I'd love to see more close ups of the machine tools and deck-gun.
