Kozo's New Shay Building Complete
« on: May 05, 2015, 10:52:28 PM »
Today worked out to be a good day to take my build of Kozo's New Shay outside for some photos and movies - got the last of the water piping/valves done and painted this morning. There are still some oil lines/etc to finish it up completely, but cosmetically it is compleete and able to run on air power, so figured it was a good time to post some pictures of it (full build thread is over in In Progress section). I started this project at the begining of last June - learned a ton of new skills during the making of it - definitely reccomend Kozo's books even if you are not going to build one of his locos, lots of great techniques in them.

Below are some photos of the engine out on the lawn, sitting on its display stand. Also some movies of it running - put blocks under the trucks to raise the wheels just off the rails so I could run it without it escaping down the street...!

Thanks to all who have followed along with this build, lending support and advice along the way - most appreciated!

Chris

Thanks guys! It was a lot of fun to build, learned a LOT of new skills along the way. If I had not retired a couple years ago, this would have taken a lot longer! A long cold winter helped too! With warm weather finally moving in the kayak and sailboat are getting a higher priority for a while.
Next projects: getting back to a plank on frame whaleboat model that I started a while back, have all the frames made, ready for keel and planking. Also working up plans for a gauge 1 switcher that will be a lot lighter and easy to move, butane fired single flue, 0-4-0.

Ah! Finally spotted the air hose in the last vid...I was wondering how you were powering it.

Chris, this has been a most enjoyable project to follow, memorable not only for what seemed to be the the speediest job this side of Schenectady, also for the quality. Thanks for letting us in on it, and I hope that the future projects will get a viewing here. Happy sailing, Hugh.

Yeah - had the compressor sitting over on the driveway so the noise would not get picked up too much by the camera... The grass hid most of it!

Thank you very much for taking us along on this trip Chris.

I must admit that I haven't commented on your progress along the way - but it has been one of the most enjoyable projects to follow the last ten months or so here on this site  :NotWorthy: and the most dependable to bring an update almost daily for all this time  :cartwheel:

You should go  :DrinkPint:  while the rest of us are going to miss seeing more of this magnificent build ....

Please promise to bring us a report of the first steam up  :whoohoo:

Best wishes

Per
