Hi Zak,

Welcome to the forum

I also have a Hobbymat with the optional milling attachment. There are several options for tooling:

1) If you are happy grinding your own tools buying some 10mm square HSS blanks will get you underway.

2) Sets of brazed carbide tipped tools are available quite cheaply, but the quality can be variable.

3) Replaceable tip tools work well but the cost of an initial set of holders and tips can be quite high.

The best suppliers depend on what part of the world you are in. There are members in most places who can offer advice.

I now use DCMT replaceable tip tooling for most work with LH, RH, Straight and Boring holders. I have a couple of blade type parting tool holders and some self ground HSS grooving tools.

I hope this helps a little.
Best regards

Roger

Good morning guys its 5.45am here in the midlands UK where I live. Thank you for the warm welcome and replies to my opening letter, this looks like a brilliant forum to join, as stated I have purchesed a Hobbymat lathe I found it strange that the tailstock and leadscrew weels are left handed threaded  for use but I supose I will get used to it!. Thanks again.

Hi Zak,

My old Hobbymat is now living with  :o Roger, she was a lovely lathe but yes the direction of the handle on the lead screw was sometimes confusing  :headscratch: I also currently have its big brother but I don't know for how much longer  :-\

If you know how to sharpen tool steel then that is your best option. As Roger said the DCMT tools are nice starting point http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/-INDEXABLE-LATHE-TURNING-TOOL-10MM-LEFT-HAND-RIGHT-HAND-EXTRA-TIPS-DCMT-904732.html but their matching boring bar needs a big diameter hole to start with.
