UK MEM @ Guildford 2015
« on: April 03, 2015, 03:00:20 PM »
Seeing our American brothers talking about Cabin fever has reminded me that the Guildford show is only 13 weeks away and I haven't done anything about it  :o

The show is the 4th and 5th of July at Stoke Park in Guildford, it is easy to get to from the M25  ;)

If anyone would like to come along and display their engines I would be pleased to see you. If you want you can drop them off on the afternoon of Friday 3rd July I personally will be dropping mine off first thing Saturday. The show opens at 10am but we really need to have the stand together by 9am and that is when they will like to see all the cars off the show ground. Sunday 5pm is time to collect your models.

If you don't want to display then you can always come and say hello  :)

Just to add to what Jo has said, you can't just turn up and display your wares they need to have been pre entered so insurance etc can be sorted and a space allocated. If you contact Jo she will be able to get the required forms sent to you.

I'll be there but may sneak off Saturday afternoon  and not return until later on Sunday.

No doubt leaving home on Sunday just after the race is finished  ::)

That means you will miss the competition between my Titan and the jet engine boys to see whose engine is the loudest  :naughty:

She's home, she's home   :whoohoo: but that doesn't mean she is allowed out of the house again :hellno: She needs to know how much she is wanted and loved at home before she goes out gallivanting with any fellas again, last time she stole the poor man's heart and it took over a year to get her back again  :-\.

I was thinking of bringing along this years engines: the B&W, the DT, Kiwi and Kitti (I might even borrow Golly  ;)), the Stentor, the Titan and maybe the Centaur.

;) and it fits straight on the carb mount I had previously made.

You could always bring an unfinished Traction engine  :mischief:

I hope to also borrow a Mk 1 Kiwi to go with the original Golly so we can provide a technical description and display of all the engines that show the evolution of the Kiwi  :happyreader:

Would anyone else like to join us  :embarassed:

Would love to come and visit the show just for the experience of having attended a model engineering show and also to meet people from MEM.  Unfortunately in that period I suspect I will be up in Scotland.

So it seems we only have Jo and Jason's models for the show this year for MEM  :???:

I might see if we can join in with the IC builders group sadly a few of them are no longer with us so they are short of members and as it is only me on the MEM stand for most of the time being co-located with them means they can provide me with time to answer the call of nature (to go and buy things  >:D)

So decision time: Cancel the MEM stand and be able to watch the F1, or struggle again like the first year  :toilet_claw:

Sadly I suspect that the Guildford show may be heading the same way as so many others, not helped that they were forced by the local council  to book it for the Silverstone weekend  :hellno:

What are you classing as "stationary engines Jo? and is that just 5 of the tables around the outside or including the middle tables?

I expect they can fill the gaps with locos anyway ;)

Does not answer my question.

Why only 5 tables, whats happened to things like the stirling engines, Tony Boxall, Mike Sayers, jet engines, other iC engine guys, assume AM is not going to be there.

Mike is currently touring Europe in one of his vintage Bentleys and has not got back  ::) The wife of the Jet turbine club organiser is not well so they have pulled out. Mike Tull is coming  ;D AM is hiding from anyone who brought a casting Set from his alternative casting supplier has "retired"

Today after a few non starts (the fuel tank was too low in the morning :ShakeHead:) the Titan ran. Having had a longer prop fitted quietened/slowed her down did a bit and she only reached 7K  :( , a shorter prop would have made her run faster/louder :naughty: Tangler took the video so hopefully you can see it later.

Before anyone asks I did not buy any castings, any that came home with me were a gift from a very nice man who knows how to butter up a lady :embarassed:

All in all another enjoyable show and the club did not make a loss so we achieved what we set out to do: to provide a show where we can get together and show off/have a good natter about building engines, thanks Rod and Jason  ;D

Jo, when do you find time to do needlework??  Maybe you should let us see some of it  :stir:.

Back when my girls were small I did some needlepoint and later cross-stitching. I found the hand work relaxing though I wasn't involved in machining at the time either.  My granddaughter is turning 5 this month and for Christmas I will be building her a dollhouse and hope to make it an interactive activity...Saturday morning trips to the big box store to pick out paint colors...or to the craft store to pick out wallpapers, etc.  Long story short, I will be giving her as part of her birthday present a needlepoint oriental rug I made probably 30 years ago, back when my eyes could still do that close up detailed work. It has been carefully put away all these years and still looks as good as the day I finished it.

Still looking forward to pics and video from the show. Glad it was successful !!

I think a good weekend was had by all :)

I have put the photos that I took of both the MEM members engines and others around the tent is a slideshow. The small engine that Jo is holding is a "Nano" made by Anthony Boxall who is more commonly known for his small versions of Anthony Mounts engines, the William Armstrong just before them is his latest.

I must say Photosuckit's slide shows are very poor: part of the screen is lost by the advert banner across the top :disappointed: and the lower part by the strip at the bottom

If you view the photo's directly you realise that even more is cut off :censored:

Simon, Affraid not there were very few details but it was a nice model

Achim, Yes I have a video though its still running on 1.5 cylinders and needs some more playing with to get it running at full strength

I look at it another way, by having one link I can copy and past that on several forums which means lots more people can enjoy the photos and that also saves me time. If I attach them here only members can see than so that excludes any casual guests who may not want to join. So in both cases PB wins for me.

I much prefer the text next to each photo on a build thread rather than having to flick up and down the page trying to work out what each photo is which is a downsid eto using attachments on this forums software. PB also lets me add a name description which you will see under most of the photos in PB.

PB also resizes them all for me automatically when I upload to a nice size for use on forums so again another advantage.

I'll keep on paying the couple of $ a month ;)

Oh and did I mention its a lot quicker to use PB with the cheapest payed option as you don't get slowed by the adverts loading

 I am still keeping my monthly out goings to a minimum until after my planned retirement next year  :mischief:, once I know if I am going to be able to fund my chosen life style I may consider additional expenses but when you work you are money rice and time poor, retirement is time rich and money poor  :-\.

As I see it I can have a nice piece of Steak or pay for a photosuckit account each month :noidea: And don't get me on how many bottles of wine giving up Sky Tv funded   :wine1:

Jo

If it's decent stuff you drink then it would be a couple of bottles not cases

Most expensive stuff we have drunk , before my Medes turned me tea total  was a free gift at Tunberry hotel champagne at £130 a bottle , mine you it was nice being free

Anyway back to your camera , to get used to it set it for medium size capture ,set it to your favourite P&P and take plenty of pics I mean hundered . The canon software is basic but gets the job done for uploading , set the focus point to single centre

So you know what it's doing set up a simple test put three things batteries or WHY in a line about 150mm apart set up at a angle focus on the centre one , yes do use the auto focus the you will see what's what with the focus DOF

I use a old 7d with a few L lens,s some ar even white on the outside  :stir:

Sorry Jason but I stand with Jo on the photsucit I tried to pause the show to look at the models in more detail even with it on slow it was to quick and small
A link to the pic would be nice as its then down to the viewer to decide

Stuart
My aim is for a accurate part with a good finish

Well, I had a lovely weekend, so nice to chat to like minded people - one or 2 of them were even interested in my engines, which was nice :)
A random selection of photos:

I'm not sure what has just happened to Mrs Tangler :o

Jo trying out the new camera

I like these because I've done a bit of this - I particulary like the Hurdy-Gurdy

I recently bought the boiler kit, wheels and gears from a stalled project for Minnie so that's me sorted for the next 10 years

and a little bit of video;

That Titan is NOISY!  I still can't believe it's only 10cc  (0.60 cu in)

Cheers,

Looks like me and Eric are twins, at least from the waist down :-\ Well almost, I don't like turnups as they collect too much swarf :ShakeHead:

Thanks for the additional pics Rod

Direct link to the Guildford album for those that want to look at individual photos but the pause tab on the slideshow will do the same job.

Thank You Jason for nice pictures.
Picture no 6 show a sidevalve fourstroke.
Has it been written about somewhere and how much power?
Picture shows a small corner of a drawing. Can we se the whole drawing?

Niels,

Probably easiest to see the details here: http://www.modelengineeringwebsite.com/Scaup_10cc.html

I've had it up to 8000rpm on an 11" x 6" prop which is roughly 1/3 HP or about 250W.

Best Wishes,

Rod

It was only ticking over at under 7000rpm  :ShakeHead:, you should hear it with its shorter prop when it is running at 9000 rpm >:D

I am sure I asked Eric if I was allowed to start my own engine but he does like to play with model engines and until he has got it running just how he likes it it is difficult to be allowed near your own engine  :-\

As I mentioned I am struggling with the camera so just a couple of different ones that I don't think any one else took  ;)

Jo

Your camera is choosing the focus point for you looks like it is getting the nearest point to focus on

Try to set it to centre and point that were you want not were the camera thinks it wants

Interesting engine in your pics

You should have let Titan have its head at let him roar

Hi Stuart,

That is a Halls Rotary for which I have a set of castings  :embarassed:  This model turned up in the trader's field for £600 and had sold before it touched the table, it was all I could do to get the five pictures I did before its new owner quickly hid it away again.

A for the Titan: Next time we will do it properly >:D

I received a note from the GMES Rally Chairman:

Dear Exhibitors and Traders,

Just a few lines to express the Guildford Model Engineering Society's members sincere thanks to you all for supporting our Rally last weekend.

Judging by the happy atmosphere on both Saturday and Sunday we gave a lot of pleasure to a lot of people that was a joy to see.  We are greatly indebted to you for helping make it all happen by bringing along your exhibits for display, railway locomotives for passenger hauling, traction engines to trundle around on, and last but certainly not least trade stands so that visitors could buy bits and pieces for their projects.

For those of you who have not seen it, David Carpenter has summed up our event  in his inimitable way on the modelengineeringwebsite http://modelengineeringwebsite.com/Guildford_2015.html#9 and we agree with everything he says.

Speaking of next year we are planning hold our annual Rally and Exhibition, our 49th, on the first week-end of July again, but the date needs to be confirmed by Guildford Borough Council before we can formally announce it later this year. We all at GMES look forward to meeting you again next year.

With kind regards,

Roger Curtis,  GMES Rally Chairman 2015

I for one am looking to go next year and the IC engine builders are hinting that they would like to come and join us  8)  We will be having a dry run at the Bristol show on the 14th August .

There is a nice write up by Dave Carpenter in this weeks edition of MEW. It describes the progress on Mike Tull's two (yes two) 1:3 scale Mercedes Benz W165 Grand Prix engines which were exhibited at the 2015 Guildford Show.  http://modelengineeringwebsite.com/Mercedes_W165.html

Mike Tull has also started a build log (blog??) for these two engines on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mercedes-Benz-M165-Grand-Prix-engine-The-construction-of-a-13-scale-model/387812084736890?fref=ts

Both the engines and web page are still ' works in progress' and the webpage only be maintained if there are enough followers. So why not become a follower.

He was going to join us here on MEM and post the build log here  8).

I have joined you on MEM as Vixen

If there is enough interest I can publish my Mercedes W165 build log on MEM instead of Facebook

Welcome Mike, we are all about build logs so yes, please post it. Also when you have a chance, you may want to post and intro in the introduce yourself section for those that may not be following this thread.

Mike,

I too would like to see the build log here. I think that a web site like this lends itself well to the format.
