1/4 scale Gade engine completed !
« on: March 06, 2015, 01:27:43 AM »
Hi everyone,
After almost 5 years of on and off (mostly off!) work, I have completed my Gade model.
Here are some pictures.
The Winter weather has given me lots of shop time. Now that this build is done, I have a lot of cleaning up to do.
I still have to make the cylinder oiler. I hope to finish it by Cabin Fever.
Now I have to get it to run reliably! I'm having some issues with carburetor flooding and the spark plug not firing well.
I'll get it worked out soon I hope.

Cheepo,
I have to say that your engine looks really good. Good luck getting it set up & running properly.

That's a nice looking engine  :praise2:  :praise2: Is that a self made sparking plug?
Best regards

Beautiful engine. I'm sure it will be running perfectly by CF. How about a finer thread on the carb adjust. 256 TPI on the HLV-H should be easy
What's on for the next 5 years?
Best,
Stan

Looks good, I usually cut a shallower point angle on the needle valves than shown on drawings to make them less of an on/off affair.

As I said on the other side, you may want to lift the fuel tank, it could be you are having to open the needle more than needed to get it to suck up fuel which then causes flooding. Full size and 1/2 scale Model Gades have the tank on the bearers not below

Hi Everyone,
 Thanks for your compliments!
Yes, the spark plug is homemade. I drew up a design and made it using a corian insulator. I wanted to make it as small as possible for a scale appearance. This led to some interesting challenges - especially trying to see what I was doing! I think the insulator is cracked inside, which may be the cause of the intermittent spark. I have another snow day today, so I will make another spark plug and see if it helps.
I did have the fuel tank on top for the test run, but the fuel level was higher than the fuel inlet on the carb. I couldn't put hardly any fuel in it without it running out of the air intake. I would have preferred a higher tank mounting for a more scale appearance. Once I get it running properly I may make another flatter fuel tank and remount it.
I am also experimenting with a much shallower taper on the fuel adjustment screw. I wish I could retap it for a finer thread, but it's already tapped to a 2-56.
My biggest priority right now is to get it running well for Cabin Fever.

Great looking engine. Can't wait to see some video of it running. Is it built from a kit of castings and if so, who are they from?

Thanks, Ray.
The casting set came from Gary Martin. ( www.martinmodel.com )
The castings were very nicely done.
I would highly recommend them.

Ray, there are also 1/2 Scale castings done by Robert Campbell  and a suitable cart kit by Iowa Miniature Engines. I'm building both at the moment :)
