If I ever win the lotto I'm going to visit all the big shows in the US and UK. Until then I can only dream about it.

Folks, I plan to go to both CF and NAMES this year. First time for CF. It will be about a 2 week trip for me as I'm coming up from Texas. I hope it's about 80 deg by then.

Since I'll be driving and pulling a trailer I was wondering if one of you local guys could help me with the roads. I am concerned about the rout between Harrisburg and Bellefonte.  Is this road a good one to travel on? is it hilly, it seems from the maps it's going across the "mountains"? I will be traveling from CF to Detroit. Any help will be appreciated.

It has been some time since I was set up at NAMES, I am hoping to go to CB and then back to NAMES. Maury, I 35 goes straight to Tx., If you want to drive to Desmoines first, your welcome to stop in. I have seen you at Portland, but am not sure what part of Tx. you live at.

The road from Harrisburg to I80 thru Bellefont is a long climb.
A better route (virtually identical mileage and time) is York, to PA Turnpike towards Pittsburgh. You'll intersect I80 near Youngstown, OH.  Not so much "up" , as the PA Turnpike has tunnels thru the mountains.
That's the route I'm taking.

Boy the year go's by fast!
Anyone that's going stop and say hi, I have never missed a show yet. It seems like only a few years ago my wife and I went to the first show, it was held at Dominoes farm over in An Arbor, and they only had a small room. I set up next to Paul Breisch , and Elmer Verburg sat right behind us. I have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of the guy's who started it all in this country. And it was a pleasure to know them. Every year I am humbled by the awesome work that shows up.
See you all there .

I missed NAMES #1 because I did not know about it, but I made #2 and every one since. I have also been to every CF. I will be doing both this year in one loop- its not worth going all the way back to Maine for just a couple days. I will be looking in on the TechShop in Detroit to review conditions for the CNC Workshop there  in June, and maybe another day at the Henry Ford.

I hope the snow is gone by then, but its only a month and 4 days until I will leave.

That is cool as heck. I had no idea shows like this existed until 2006 so I never had the pleasure of meeting most of the old timers. I got sucked in by Dale Detrich. It's all his fault!!

Maury,
I just saw your post, my in-laws live in Akron about 25 minutes from York. The route we have settled on to and from Wisconsin is 76 to Harrisburg to 283 (its a mumbo jumbo through Harrisburg) to 322-22 to I80 west. Any way you go across central Pennsylvania you are going to hit mountains. Cept for a few spots 322-22 is four lane, the hilliest part is near State College and comparatively that is a small section. There are no tunnels and it's a nice drive. PM me if you want more details.

So who all is going? is anybody going to set up a MEM area? I don't know yet which hotel I will be at, but we plan to leave Wisconsin Thursday evening stay at a hotel somewhere east of Chicago and arrive midday Friday. I am all for connecting a face with all the names!

Ok now here's the printed correction. For all the confused it is a Phase III tool holder 250-102, I have 2 I cant use and will bring along. I need a 250-202 holder. I will also bring along an Ellison dividing head.

I'm a long-time lurker, zero-time exhibitor at NAMES, and considering showing an engine for the first time

Are others going to group up with Stan under the MEM banner?

I know some here will set up with their own local groups or prefer to fly alone, but for others who might want to group up with MEM, do we need a loose plan?

What time do you expect to arrive there Stan?

Tim, Stan,
That sounds like a great idea, I would like to be part of a MEM grouping. Stan you are one of the two people from SE Pennsylvania that I've met. I expect to leave WI, Thursday evening stay somewhere when we feel to tired to travel anymore, and arrive around midday Friday. Save me a spot.

I expect I'll get there mid-morning Friday.

ArtK, I may want to buy those 250-102 holders off of you. I always buy a few off of Frank at the CDCO booth each year (he usually runs a show special on them), but Phase III brand would be a little nicer.

I usually sit in the same spot every year with the Metro Detroit Metalworking Club. My normal tables are marked in blue. What do you MEM members think about trying to gang up in the area marked in orange? Some of the MEMbers already make a home here. I will be there early Friday morning so I can try to get Dave to put some reserved signs up. Cant say for sure but he might. If anybody is interested I can try to reserve enough space.

If not i'll just reserve less orange. First step is to make sure the area isn't spoken for already. If not Ill see who speaks up by Wednesday and try to get the spots. If it doesn't work out I'll try to organize better next year.

I might be jumping the gun here but in the event that the area is free, how much space would each person need?

Post up what you think you might need. Stan, Art, 1/2 table, full table, 2 tables, what do you think you will need? I'll start a list so if they say yes I'll have some idea.

Disagree with KVOM. The Joy's valve engine sounds great, is a beautiful build and is a beast. You know it's a big engine when the head bolts are ¼-20.

OK men . . . or MEM, here is the scoop. The tables I had hoped for were spoken for but one of them is a member here. Dave set aside a block of tables. They are just one row over. There should be plenty of room and the banner will have plenty of space to spread out. The red is where I'll be and the black is where the MEMbers can be so I can still visit often. I have 6 tables marked but he said we could have 7. I think it's the back left table in the string.

Sshire         1 table
ArtK            ½ Table
tvoght         1/2 Table
gldavison     1 Table

Who else would like to sit in the MEM section?

Unfortunately there are 14 castings in the set, 10 unique.  Likely too much work to make the patterns.  However if the base and slide frames (most difficult to fabricate) were available then the rest wouldn't be too hard.

I will be a vendor this year. Last year I took a break and just enjoyed the show as a spectator. My partner (also named Doug) will be setting up on Friday and I hope to be up on Saturday. My day job made it impossible to go to CF and is going to make me a day late for NAMES. Instead of enjoying a show I was up until 2:30am last Friday deploying a major software release  >:( and instead of setting up at NAMES on Friday I will be releasing new software and hopefully heading up to MI for the show Saturday.  :)

I have a few new things to show and some things that are in the pipe line. Some already know but we now have the Quincy, Ball Hopper Monitor, and Aermotor. Still getting a few things trued up on those but hope to have kits available soon.

See you all there!,

One could be the vendor, One could display models they built, and the other one could walk around and talk to people!  ;)

Just to let you know that we are just about set and only have a few small things to finish up. And for any that be wondering the admission for those that are just looking is the same as last year. we will be ready for exhibitors as of Friday morning 8am. And there will be some room for the MEM crew Dave saved a number of tables since you are a group. if you don't need them then somebody else will use the space. See you on Friday.

Looks like a 9-10 hour drive for me. Something to consider next year. Especially now that it's spaced out from CF. Or CF spaced out from NAMES.

Looking forward to the pictures.

All

Saw your setup area.  I am with Jim G over on the other side, its about 7 hours for Gen and I.  Look forward
to seeing you.  I have not been posting on my Rider as I been going all out to get it done.  It is running just
needs final plumbing but basically done.

Let me know if anyone is getting together for fri or sat night.

See you Friday

Bob

Visited Henry Ford yesterday  along with Greenfield  village  to see the roundhouse.  It was opening day with free admission.  Lots of school groups  but they  weren't  too interested in steam engines .  I discovered  that the large red engine driving a generator also uses Joy valve system !

I'm  going to the DIA art museum today .

My engine will be at the Lone Star  table along with Maury's other  two models.  I should be over there for setup mid morning .

I did. New pump rod to replace the bent one. I reseated the SS ball but I still have to do my "secret priming technique"
