Valentines Day Outing
« on: February 14, 2015, 06:10:11 PM »
Took the wife to Kew Gardens and as Kew Bridge steam museum just happened to be nearby we popped in and recorded a few videos ;-)

This one is long but is worth watching for the dexterity required by the operator just to get the engine started;

Yeah that cornish engine was an eye opener - wonder if the slow uneven motion would scale down though?

Thanks for the videos Simon, in answer to your question, yes they can be scaled. Neil Carney (ME Editor Diane's Dad) built a very nice one that was in ME not long ago.

Thank you Simon,

Very enjoyable; and the Cornish engine is very interesting.

Would be fun to see in person someday.

This one is long but is worth watching for the dexterity required by the operator just to get the engine started;

Thank you Simon, great stuff.  :cheers:

The manual dexterity is quite normal when warming through recips. The idea is to change the direction of the piston (s) before reaching the end of the stroke and attempt to compress the water condensed in the cylinder (s) whilst still "cold."

Recips will show and tell when they are ready to run and the process cannot be rushed without the risk of major damage. There is nothing quite like the god almighty bang at the end of the stroke if you push too hard, or the cylinder blow off gives you a very hot and very uncomfortable shower.

Best Regards
Bob

YUP!    If you rolled Sabino's engine too quick, the bang would shake the boat!.....You  learned quickly not to do that!

Thanks for the videos, Simon.   Glad to see them running,  I was there on a week-day afternoon in June and the
only thing running was the till at the tea counter :'(   (was still time well spent)

Cheers,  Joe

They seem to split their running days into Cornish engines and Rotative engines, yesterday was supposed to be a rotative day yet they had the Boulton and Watt Cornish engine running  :headscratch:

Their website is delightfully amateur so it's probably worth ringing in advance to check what they plan to run on any given day.

Simon, That means you will have to go back to see the 90 inch run  :Love:

The Boulton and Watt is a sweetie but doesn't go wooooosh quite like her big sister  ;D.
