Never underestimate the power of steam
« on: August 04, 2012, 11:15:06 PM »
Saw this over on Chaski - a 5" gauge model locomotive pulling a seven ton actual size railroad car.

Yeah, max torque at zero rpm.  None of this whiny 7000 rpm IC stuff before you start getting some power.

Oh, and BTW, it's spelled "wondrous".  (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

On Sabino...the engine room was run via a bell code.   Without going into that story...there was one code that meant "Emergency Astern"   The command amounted to taking the reversing lever and throughing the engine into astern while at full throttle ahead.   Full Ahead to Full astern in about 1-2 seconds.  never even touching the throttle!

That with a 48" diameter 4 blade bronze prop that weighs over 500 pounds turning at 150 rpm......if the 3.5" prop shaft doesn't break....your going backwards..... :o

Dave,
Your  forgot to mention a KEY thing what type of steam engine????

I had to respond to an emergency full astern bell while the ship was at full sea speed, but the engine was a 900mm bore low speed Sulzer diesel. That made the process of reversing the main engine different.

Sorry for that Dan!

A 7 x 14 x 12 fore and aft Payne compound.   We run 135psi saturated....about 75HP

But they're Clydsdale horsepower...not gerbal horsepower.....but you know that Dan. ;D

Yes, from Full Ahead to Full Astern, the steam recip engine has the quickest response, provided your damn quick with the lever and it, (if it's big enough), has a Browns reversing engine not all round reversing gear. Next comes the steam turbine although astern horsepower is normally a maximum of 1/3 ahead horsepower. A typical steam turbine powered destroyer would  stop in around 1.5 times its' length, (600-700ft) and reach maximum astern speed, (around 16knots), in 1.5 mins. A distant last comes a big direct acting 2 stroke diesel such  as Dan mentioned.

Best Regards
Bob

Hey Bob,

Sabino just has a lever reverse for the Stevenson valve gear.    As fast as you can swing the lever.
