Jared thank you for your kind comment. I am new to this site so I have been rather randomly reading through some of the other builds I have to say I feel a bit like a novice looking at some of the stunning workmanship of some of the engines that are showcased here.

I am still fettling away with the operation of the gearbox and linkage, it does work which pleases me no end.

This first picture shows the lever in the reverse position and the swiveling collar is pulled back disengaging the spring and at the same time rotating the top lever of the band clamp.

Here the lever in the forward position the collar has engaged with the spring and clamped the clutch plates and has moved the clamp lever forward which spreads the band clamp and releases the gearbox.

A couple of overall shots of the present state of the whole assembly.

I whipped up a quick propeller to enable the visual of the forward /reverse to be more easily seen in video.

Mike nice save on the handle. Usually when I bend something in the lathe it is scrap.

That is really looking like the drawing link. I am looking forward to seeing the video of it in operation.

Great progress Mike!

I'm still following along and enjoying your work; the reversing gear is real nice and the family shot is just great!
It is amazing how tiny everything is and you don't realize it until there is a picture with your fingers in it. Thanks for taking the time to post your work here on MEM.

Dan and Dave thanks for your kind remarks. I am starting to work on the meat of the engine now namely the pistons and con rods, having just read through all the posts on the high performance research work by Jim Allen, I feel a bit like a kid with some first crayons.

My goodness there is some phenomenal work being done with model engines.

Working at this small scale does have its own challenges, and the "Cut and Try" line suits me very nicely indeed. That said here is the progress on the pistons

I used the basic ideas used for the tiny engine by Putputman to design the piston. and made a small holding fixture to drill the wrist pin hole and to work on the inside of the piston, which I still need to do.

They seem to fit nicely enough and slide up and down smoothly, and since I am hoping to have this engine run slowly, they will probably work OK. the pistons are .311 in diameter and .372 high

Beautiful work Mike. That gearbox is a work of art as is the engine. I am really enjoying the build log.

A bit more progress on the engine I am now working on the con rods.

I ended up making a new set of pistons and reworking the inside shape  to fit the top end of the rods.

The clamping block worked out well enough.

The big end split using a slitting saw in the lathe ready for the split bushing

the first piston connected to the rod.

I turned up a steel pin that was a tight push fit and then used the lathe as a shaper, turned a small round nosed bit sideways and moved the carriage back and forth as the top end was incrementally turned by hand to shape the top end around the wrist pin hole.

The brass bolts are temporary just for the machine work.

More work today on the con rods

I used a hard button to guide the files for the bottom of the rod.

The upper crankcase was placed on backwards I noticed after uploading the pictures.

This is getting more fiddly by the day it seems.

Very nice work Mike. I know what a file button is for but there is no after photo so we can see how it was used and how the con rod bolts fit the finished big end.

Dan thanks, I will be making the second bushing today and will take some pictures of the shaping of the bottom and of how I used the shape to lock the bottom end of the bolts.

Quite impressive, Mike!  And much smaller than I've been picturing, now that I see your fingers up next to it!

I went through your entire build log this am....wow! The small scale of everything and the results of your efforts are impressive. The reversing gear and the tiny compression cocks are really works of functional art. I like all the hand shots for a true realization of the size.  I'll be following this more closely. Great job Mike.
