Manhattan (NYC) Workshop
« on: December 06, 2014, 05:43:47 PM »
I though you guys might like to see how I've managed to squeeze a little workshop into the mechanical room of our building in Manhattan.  I'm pretty fortunate to have any space at all in the middle of Manhattan, where parking spaces sell in the six figures.  It's cozy, but it's all mine, and I've managed to fit it out pretty well for my needs.

I spent the last year restoring and upgrading the 1967 Clausing Mill.  It now boasts an EL700 DRO from DRO Pros and is tighter than most new machines I've used. I picked it up for a great price and have really enjoyed working on it - it replaces me Seig X2.  Only downside is going from R8 to 2MT tooling.

The 1941 South Bend 9a replaces a Seig/HF min lathe. No tradeoffs there  - I have a it well tooled with 3, 4, & 6 jaw chucks, production cross slide, full set of Hardinge collets and all the cutting tools I could ever need.

On the quiet side of the shop I have bench top tool storage.  There's a 1937 Walker Turner drill press underneath that I restored and upgraded  with a Rohm keyless chuck and a new spindle that I machined up and installed with new ball bearings. Motor is original ;-).

Now that I've got al my machines sorted, I'm about to embark on a large casting kit - thinking I'll tackle the Red Wing Hit n Miss, as it's a well documented build and I'm still a novice when it comes to machining.

Thanks for looking, glad to answer any questions.

Thomas

Heh, the problem with a shop this small is that even the smallest mess takes up an inordinate amount of working space. It's not really a matter of choice to be neat, its a necessity. But I admit to being a little OCD anyway.  :insane:

Hi Tater, nice shop. Seems to be  similar to my refugium, which is under the rooftop.
Kind Regards

Well - Sad News  - due to divorce/relocation EVERYTHING in this shop is for sale.

Causing 8520 - probably the nicest, tightest, cleanest, original one on the planet  - no joke - and I have a complete second milling head!  It's 3phase has a top of the line digital, graphical Electronic EL700 DRO (with digital probe!) and original Clausing milling vise and Kurt 5" vise with brand new stepped jaws.  6" south bend rotary table  - never used.  Phase II Collet Indexer - never used.

South Bend 9a with 3, 4, and Buck 6 Jaw  - plus a complete production t-slot cross slide with 3! complete tool posts. Dogs, & drive plate, full set of Hardinge collets, so many extras to list.

never used portable Oxy Acetylene welding setup

Small Walker Turner bench top drill press  - brand new spindle, converted to Rhom keyless chuck

Makita "cold" chop saw (brand new)

6" Lista workbench

Lista rolling tool chest with maple top

massive amounts of tooling.

 Mesa index tooling

hundreds of solid carbide endmills

Wilton disk/belt sander

DeWalt Bench Grinder

Band Saw

Lots of aluminum stock

top quality hand tools galore.

so much more -

ALL IN NYC - ALL PICKUP  ONLY   -  Love to sell it all as a package  - PERFECT setup for model engineer.

Conservative estimate of value is $ 18,000.00 - sell it all  - you pick it up for $12k!!

I'm actually relocating to England - job in London - family in the countryside.  But I don't know if the shipping costs and swapping over all the electrics are worth it???

If you really want a single lot sale contact Gary Schoenly of Cabin Fever Auctions. He will clean out the entire shop and pay you either and agreed amount or the proceeds of an auction sale. He has cleaned out many shops like that, he even came up to Maine to clear a shop after the owners death and the heirs wanting a simple one step deal. I have told my wife to contact Gary in the event of my passing- I think she would get a fair deal and it would be done simply and quickly.
