Cherry's Model Engines
« on: November 30, 2014, 03:18:31 PM »
I recently received a new book entitled Cherry’s Model Engines, it describes Cherry Hill’s career as an excellent model engineer, it is well produced and has good quality photographs (shot by Cherry) of her wonderful models.
The book would make an excellent Christmas present for anyone who appreciates exquisite craftsmanship. (usual disclaimer)
I would rank Cherry Hill along with Gerald Windgrove as the finest model engineers of the present era.

My copy arrived yesterday from Amazon. Even with just a quick cursory look so far, I must say this is a very well done book filled with lovely pictures, inspiration, and certainly a testament to Ms. Hills exquisite craftsmanship!!  Well worth the cost IMHO.

Here's a link to something that GWRdriver posted back on HMEM for those that may not be familiar with Cherry Hill.

http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/showthread.php?t=19685

I had not known she'd moved to Florida.

Googling gives scant info. I'm looking forward to getting this book.
If my kids don't come through...I'll get it myself...and let them know it is at their inheritance expense.
So they're paying for it one way or another.   ;D

I was under the impression that Amazon would not have them available until the new year.  Since you folks are already receiving them, I went back and ordered my copy.  I should have it next week.

Folks who haven't yet ordered it should probably do so soon.  This is likely to become another Elmer's Engines.  Small numbers printed and no reprints because, appealing to only niche hobbyists, few are sold.  Then, as time moves on, more and more folks want a copy and the existing copies start selling for silly prices.

I ordered my copy yesterday, it shipped today, and should be in my grease-free mitts by tomorrow :happyreader:

While researching Cherry Hill's bio using Google I had to laugh at one of the entries that said "Buy Cherry Hill's Model Engines at Walmart".   I was all set to rush off to the local Walmart and buy one of her models but when I went to the link

http://www.walmart.com/ip/40569940

Alas, it's the book.  There's a grammatical trick here somewhere :noidea:

Proper English usage says that, since it's a book title, it should be Italicized, e.g.

Cherry Hill's Model Engines

then there would be no confusion.

Aside:  If working in a medium (e.g. typewriter) where an Italic font is unavailable, it's permissible to surround the title with double quote marks.

Probably more than you wanted to know, but I keep trying to improve the use of the language.  I'm hoping to get a job pushing a big rock up a hill.

I Finally received my copy of Cherry's Model Engines today and at first glance it's a superb book, well worth the price paid.
With the exception of a few closeups, which could have had more focus and depth of field, the photos and color are excellent
and nicely balanced with text.  My first thought after my initial scanning through was . ."I won't be surprised if there's a Vol.ll."

I'll start in on the text later tonight and I'll be curious to see what level it's been written to.   To a very high level, one would hope,
as the buyers of this book shouldn't need to have the hammer explained to them.

Thats one of the reasons you were able to say "its well worth the cost"  ;)

I'm sure that if it were printed in the UK it would have cost considerably more.

Interesting Marv...and one seller "SKYBOK" lists a used one for $262 and change while he lists a new one at $122 and change...what's up with that??  I would be surprised if they are actually getting that for them yet. I would think the publisher would go for a second printing if its moving that fast so far. Just happy I got my copy at the original Amazon price.

Thanks for the Book Depository link. I've had it on order with Amazon since December and they have no projected ship date. Cancelled that one.
Maybe I shouldn't have cancelled. This could become another "Elmer's Engines" at outrageous eBay prices.

Amazon seem to be very good doing this. I recall one author who couldn't find a publisher to print his book for him so was selling his books out of his garage and discovered Amazon were offering his book on a discount.

As he said they had not made contact and as it cost him more than what amazon were offering to sell the books at to have them printed they would not be getting any either  ;).

I was careful to say that I had my name on a book; I did not say that I wrote the book.  After all, can you picture me writing a book on literature?

The story goes like this...

When I was living in Westwood, quite close to the UCLA campus, I kept getting annoying phone calls from students requesting extensions on the due date for their papers.  They always referred to me as "Professor Klotz".

It happened enough that I investigated and discovered that there was a professor at the college with the surname "Klotz".  No amount of explanation of the confusion to the students seemed to stem the annoying phone calls so I just went with the flow and began giving anyone who called a four week extension.   :mischief:

After the prof retired I learned through my connections at the college that his given name was "Marvin".  What are the chances of two people with that set of names living a few miles from each other?

One day I was digging through the detritus at the local library book sale and stumbled on the pictured tome.  There I was or, rather, there he was; well, anyway, "we" had our name on the cover.

Books of literature appreciation are useless so the price was very low.  I snapped it up and now keep it on the coffee table to (falsely) impress yuppie pseudo-intellectuals when they wander in from wherever people like that live.

Thanks for clearing that up Marv.  I'd say the probability of finding 2 Marvin Klotz's within a few miles from each other likely matches the probability of a mathematician writing a book about literature.

Well, since we're chattering.

My real name is the same as someone more well-known than me, and I used to regularly get calls telling me my airline tickets and hotel reservations were ready for travel to (Name your big city of choice in the USA).

Amazon US currently has a bunch of new copies from sellers at reasonable prices, within a buck or two of the Amazon price. Most of the sellers are from UK, but shipping is cheap. Mine is on the way...
A couple listed at crazy prices - they will be there for a while! Saw the same thing when buying Kozos' train books, still in print at list price from publisher, some sellers asking 3 or 4 times that. Nuts!

On mine I ordered through Amazons web site, but ordered actual book through alternate seller. Click where it says something like '13 new from $34'. Amazon handles the money and guarantees. On the rare occasions where the other seller caused issues, Amazon made it right for me. Amazon itself is still out of stock, but plenty of other sellers have them - last I looked a half dozen under $40.

My copy from The Book Depository got delivered this morning, had a flick thru and I can see I am really going to enjoy reading this!

My only criticism: the majority of the images appear to be soft, I don't think this is a printing error as some pages with two images will have one sharp and one soft, a bit of a shame. It's still going to be a good read, just a pity the images aren't nice sharp and detailed.

... (and depressed when I cannot get close to the quality!)...
I don't think anyone should get depressed. The amount of work Cherry puts into her models is simply phenomenal.
I'd have to go back and check the book (I'm at work) but I think the model on the cover took 8000 hours over 5 years. That works out to an average of around 4 hours 20 mins every.... single.... day, for 5 years!!!
How many of us have that much time to devote to a hobby?!
I would, if I could!!

It is for this very reason that I never critisise any model, however it looks, because I know how much effort goes in to them and the builder has done the best they can with the tools, experience and time they have available to them.
I'm happy if I even get to turn my lathe on, let alone cut any metal with it!

P.S. Can't help but think of Jo as I read it.  :mischief:

Thank you Zee, but I have seen Cherry's models in the metal, they are exquisitely detailed and true showcase models, as well as fully working  :o.

I too would like to be able to spend 4 hours a day in the workshop but I don't feel the need to count those hours or the number of parts I manage to make (anymore  ;) )

I don't own a copy of this book, I have flicked through one. I have lots of other must reads that I still have not read  :(

Apologies, it was the Burrell Showman's engine.
This is my favourite of her engines, I guess that's why those figures stuck!

Thanks for the heads-up. I am ordering a copy today.

Have there ever been any articles in print or on the web that give a tour of her workshop?

No, there is a little about her workshops in the book but not much.

The second edition is now available by all accounts.

I just received my copy. It was worth every penny and is a book that I would recommend to every model maker.

I found myself wishing that there were more close-up photos showing the many details of each piece. I would have gladly paid double for double the size. Not a complaint, mind you. I have probably become spoiled by access to digital photos in which I can zoom in at will.

Autumn 2008 ME and MEW print special "Setting up a Workshop".

Exclusive! Cherry Hill interview. 14 pages of text and photos. I'd forgotten I had it, so I'm going to read it again. Bit of a downer for anyone who is setting up a workshop though. Hers is enough to make you give up before you've even started!

The book is about to go to its fourth reprint - but still available in the meantime.
