High speed boat engine recommendations
« on: December 28, 2014, 01:04:06 PM »
I'm starting to think about building a boat......

Thinking along the lines of a not too big flash steam boat that can be used on smaller ponds, capable of reasonable speeds but not crazy like the ones attached to rope going around a pole at over 100mph, those scare the crap out of me

So thought I'd start asking around about a suitable engine. Something along the lines of the Stuart sun possibly. Any plans around? Elmer did make a boat engine similar to the Stuart, not sure if it is ideal though......

Thanks :)

An excellent topic on this subject is here:

The problem is that George only has an on-off engine control.  Full throttling a monotube boiler is a lot tougher problem.  I'm working on the issue.  There are a lot of mechanical solutions but none look easy.  This is an electronic system for a moderate performance controller.

I think an Arduino controller would be the current choice because of all the canned programming solutions.  The above system used the controller to maintain temperature while controlling speed with a variable water feed.  That probably leads to a variable pressure system similar to one tried a long time ago in cars.  See the NASA Report http://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=19750006062  I would be glad to share my research on the subject.  I've just started to build the hardware to try everything first on a test bench. It will all take a lot of time.
