Lots of swarf
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:02:01 PM »
A local guy here sent me a couple of photos.  He is working on a full size model of a Ford Quadricycle.  He just machined part of the 18" diameter flywheel.

Are you going to discuss workshop safety with him?

Right on Marv and Dave. I wouldn't want to be within 10 feet of that lathe with it running. With all due respect to the machinist, that is beyond unsafe...it just plain foolish!

I'm hoping he only placed it there once finished  :insane:  Surely no-one would be that dumb to work like that
I'll give him the benefit of doubt

you all may be over reacting on the swarf pile up.  There appears to be some sort of tool lying on the tailstock. I would bet he is using that tool to pull the swarf from the cutting area and then is placing it back behind the tail stock. Of course I may just be optimistic on this....

I watched a competent machinist loose 3 fingers to a swarf pile 1/10 that size...long stringy stainless steel chips....he was pulling it away with pliers...and a loop formed...and went around the last 3 fingers of his right hand...the one holding the pliers.....took them off instantly....Weeks of surgeries, and rehab...but he was NEVER the same....

Get that crap off the lathe....early and often.

Dave, was he ever a member here? If so I don't see him under that name. I do recall the name though, probably from over at the other site.
