A good find
« on: November 02, 2014, 09:58:41 PM »
At a local boot sale yesterday, I came across an interesting 'box' of bits.

Having purchased same (£15) and cleaned up I found nearly all of a fine feed attachment for my Cowells lathe together with a leadscrew, apron, feed nut and handwheel.

It didn't take long to set up the fine feed gizmo.

But there is one missing gear. The ones I've got are a 64T and a 56/20 cluster and I'm not sure what the missing one is. Some research is required!

One advantage of a Cowells sized lathe is that when you drop a collar into the clutch housing and it falls out of reach into the base casting of the lathe, at least you can pick the lathe up, tip it over and give it a good shake to get the collar out again!

Very nice find John. I would bet those little bits new would have cost 10 times what you paid if not a lot more. They look to be in good shape too.

Good find John :o

I think you are missing the 16 and 32 teeth gears. That double gear goes in the centre idler pin. I have the cutters for the Cowells gears  ;).

:headscratch: I wonder what happened to the rest of it.

Hi John,

I've confirmed the gear sizes for the standard set (64, 56, 32, 20, 16) ;)

The feed gears are all 32DP, 6.35mm thick. Your missing blanks need to be: 16 tooth = 14.3mm dia (cutter 7), 32 tooth = 27mm dia (cutter 4). Tooth cutting depth = 1.78mm.

Thanks Jo. Gearcutting will be  first for me so glad to have the excuse. In the meantime I want to make some progress on Georgina so will remain on manual feed for now.
