Hi David, nice going
For the valve I normally just use feeler gauge as in the ones we used to set points with or the tappets .
May not be large enough for youre engine. Just make a little punch and block to make the hole a bit like the toolmakers shim punch blocks or trap it between two bits of scrap to drill the hole.Telling me granny how to suck eggs
It maybe beneficial to knife edge the back of the flame hole as per poppin it does seem to help.
Oh well back to my conundrum Iv dug a hole :censored: :hammerbash:
cheers

Hi David,
Another rescue operation, well done! And another interesting "how to fix it".

Had a friend who was into clock making who was also in need of a spring like you are hunting for used a feeler gauge, he hunted for a while & found a set that would of been 100 plus mm long....its been some years & hes no longer around. Maybe be worth a look

Cheers Kerrin

Hi Frazer.

The slot is 22mm wide. But, I've got plenty of shim, to practice with......  ;)

Just keep on telling (reminding), granny. This old un, needs a nudge, now and again.  ::)

I am planning to chamfer the slot. Should be "fun", with a ball end cutter.

Good luck, with your conundrum. I'll stick with this one, for now.

Hi Kerrin.
Thanks for your kind comment. Also, for the feeler gauge tip.

I've had a veritable chorus of members, from two forums. All with the same idea.
Why didn't it occur to me?  :embarassed:

Jon.
The available tape return springs, measure up at only 2 thou thick. Handy to remember, though. Thanks for the tip!

Feeler gauges....... Hmmm.....
Not given them a thought, for the past 20 years, or so. No need, for modern vehicles.

Just been rummaging, in my old toolboxes........

What a trip, down memory lane!  ^-^

The central one. For my first motorbike. Came from the Brighouse branch of Woolworths, 1960. Cost 1s 3d.

The lower one was bought for my brand new, 1965 BSA Lightning.

The top one, when I went metric. Around 1980.

I've got all the spring steel I need...... Thanks for the posts, and pm's Fellas! Much appreciated.

Mine wasn't new when I had it, as you may have guessed you brought yours before I was born  ;)

Frazer.
Many a true word........  ::)

Bought, when Jo was merely a twinkle. I've never since, owned a worse collection, of of poorly designed/ mis matched/ badly assembled parts.
I still have the l/h piston, with it's detached crown. Very memorable ride home from the Yorkshire Dales on one cylinder, and a close ratio gearbox.........  :ShakeHead:

Whoever got it, after my 2 years ownership, got a good un.
To me, it was a waste of a hard earned £341 12s 3d. I never bought another new vehicle, until last year.......  ;)

The little coil spring, saved the day.......

Gave it a flick....... And it stuttered into life!!.......
