2 cylinder OHV 29ccm
« on: September 30, 2014, 08:28:54 PM »
Hello
finaly, after some months, I've decided  to contribute with some photos from my build.
Despite I started this project back in 2006 it is still not fully finished.

So , It was back in 2006 when I was strongly encouraged by my success with very first IC engine- webster, with some modifications.
I was very sure that I want to build another engine, so I took a paper, pencile and got in to sketching..

Inspired by "silver bullet" from Bob Shores I aimed for vertical 2 cylinder with exposed OHV, oil splash lubrication and water cooling.

photos to follow..

Perry, you could have hit the limit for a single post which is 10 MB.  Generally you should reduce picture size to no more than 800 x 600 pixels which is more than enough to show detail on the forum. This will keep you from hitting the overall size limit and also helps out our members with slower connections. These mega-pixel sized photos simply take a lot of time to download and offer no advantage as to picture clarity or detail.

Hi Roger
cylinder head does not have water passages, I was thinking a lot how to do that  but due to lack of skills at that time, I decided to go just with cooled cylinder block.

But as there are only two o-rings as head gasked, I guess that heat transfer from head to block is quite good.

Perry,

I think you can edit your posts and delete the larger photos and replace them with smaller ones, however, I would leave them as is and just post downsized images in your future posts.

hi Allen, while the pistons are traveling up and down together, valve timing makes them breath 360degrees of crank revolution apart
which means if 1st cylinder is in compression, the other is in exhaust cycle already. common for motorcycle paralel twin engines.

that glorious and exciting moment when my scratch build engine started for the first time was well worth all the troubles I had during machining.

There were quite a few serious problems revealed during the first runs :

- really bad vibrations - I did not make any calculations and only estimated the counterweight size prior to first run
- arcing distributor and overheating ignition coil
- oil being pushed out of the one exhaust
- dragster-like fuel consumption

but all in all a success

first necessary step was to balance rotating mass as good as possible.

while this is paralel twin, the same  static balance rules apply just like for single cylinder.

calculating with 100% rotating mass +50% Reciprocating mass I've ended up with missing 80 grams at the counter weights !  ups..

most recent update report :

- crankshaft balancing prooved to be success  :cartwheel:

- brass fuel tank can now be bolted directly to engine as it is not shaking anymore, but is getting quite hot quickly -need thermal insulation insert/shield

- intergated "fuel constant level tank" is not working reliably, perhaps due to very thin tubes (capilars) used to keep it compact + as the fuel tends to heat up from engine quickly, raising internal pressure is pushing fuel out  of the venting capilar

- distributor crossarcing was successfuly eliminated by rather thick black nilon insert.

- conventional ignition and breaker point was replaced by CDI unit with hall sensor from S/S Machine & Engineering -works great! very strong and reliable spark

- water pump does not work continuosly - will need to investigate

water cooler still needs to be finished
reliable fuel level control must be ensured - perhaps external float chamber

Hi Perry, great job. Thanks for sharing all these pictures and showing the road you have gone. Good to know that also at this type of engines the counterweight calculation has to be done accurate.

So no primary balance plus a fore-aft f/2 rocking couple? I suppose it could be sold to ladies via those shops with the blacked-out windows!  :stir:

thanks for nice comments  :)

forgot to mention :  Bore 25mm, Stroke 30mm

Carburetor is from some nitro rc airplane engine- not sure about the size..
once most of the bugs will be tuned out my plan is to make carburetor with more tuning possibilities such as Jerry Howel's carburetor or simmilar.

Perry,
Sorry I missed your thread earlier, then was busy and didn't get around to reading it. Good build, you have some clever touches like the angled roller rockers. Runs great, has sort of an agricultural tone to it, good job.
