A tempting Stirling
« on: September 09, 2014, 09:41:48 AM »
Guys I want your suggestions: On his Stirling and a Praxinoscope Frazer has suggested that I should make a Stirling engine. So I am looking for a model engine that is:

1, Interesting  :happyreader:,

2, Sexy  :naughty:,

3, Desirable ,

4, That even I will be able to get to run  :lolb:

Any suggestions?

Jo

P.S. My normal supplier doesn't have any castings for Stirling engines  :disappointed:

I would say Jan Ridders stirling engines are definitely interesting, not sure about sexy, and in my opinion, desirable. Not quite sure about #4 though, haven't actually got to building any myself so I wouldn't know..... :) the great thing is he offers the plans for free

Senfts ringbom engines are also very nice but you would have to buy the book.

Just my opinion, don't know much about them and haven't even got around to completing my first one...... I'm sure others can provide much better advise than me :)

I'd wait a while - in a couple of week's time it's possible that all Stirling engines could become foreign nationals and therefore not legal within the rUK or the EU...

I've made a decent start on that one. Just trying to find some 50mm OD glass for the displacement cylinder/chamber (and some time)

How about Jerry-Howells "Vicky" ...a Victorian take on the stirling. All bar stock, no castings though.

As you have a love of castings, what about the Essex either from Myford Boy or the other from the Jacob's castings by Littlelocos

If you want something simpler then again Myfordboys "Stove" engine would sit nicely on your wood burner

Or scratch built smal ryder Erricson, there were drawings in ME a couple of years back

Or you could measure up my Bohm one :)

How about a Denny Improved Ericsson Hot Air Engine  from Polly wobbles ( well that what it sound like when Jayne answers the phone)

I have one it's old now and scruffy be it does run as and when I want to run it for visitors

It's a AM one but the castings are ok the down side it the £220

My aim is for a accurate part with a good finish

Jerry died a few years ago and his son is continuing to offer the plans. I suspect he does not want to do the conversion to electronic form, and risk  them turning up on the web somewhere.

I can tell you that Jerrys plans are excellent, well drawn, and with good instructions. He was a master at the model art, his passing was a great loss.

I agree Jerry Howell's plans are excellent.  I almost overlooked his "Duplex Vacuum" engine, as the name suggests it might be an atmospheric engine. It's in fact a Beta Stirling with an interesting linkage that  distinguishes it from the more common Rider-Ericsson (more in the Heinrici style). Its called a Duplex Vacuum because that's the name of the Chicago company that produced it.
