I no longer patronize Micro-Mark because of their outrageous prices but I do mine their catalogue for shop ideas. I like the design of their sanding blocks...
http://www.micromark.com/sanding-blocks-set-of-2,7084.htmlbut not the price ($34.40 for two wooden blocks) so I decided to make my own...
The one on the left is a direct copy of theirs while the one on the right is my own design. The dimensions of each are mathematically adjusted (who would have thought sanding block design would involve irrational numbers) so that a strip cut from a standard sheet of sandpaper fits perfectly. And, yes, Canadians, that's a genuine (Chinese) Robertson screw locking the sandpaper on the brown one; we lower-48ers know a good thing when we see it.
OK, it's not metalworking, although the sandpaper could be emery and I've used sandpaper to "adjust" metal fits and finishes in the past, but I thought some of you might appreciate the ideas.
