Bugatti straight eight flywheel
« on: September 03, 2014, 02:22:09 PM »
Hello,
my name is Michael from germany and i am currently building a Bugatti 50T engine in 1/4 scale. I started the work in 2005.
Since i finished the crankshaft i wonder how big the flywheel should be
The crank is realy heavy because of the massive construction, maybe ther is no need for a real flywheel.
Has anybody Information about dimensioning flywheel for ic?
Thanks in advance.

Michael

Michael, first of all welcome to MEM. When you can, please post a brief introduction in the "Introduction" category so that we can welcome you properly. I am sure many would like to know about your shop, and the history of this project and anything else you would like to share.

As to the flywheel dimensions, since you are making a 1/4 scale model, it would seen that you want the dimensions to reflect the same scale based on the size of the prototype engine itself.  If your are still worried about weight due to the weight of the crank, you might consider making it the same (scale) size, but considering alternative materials to adjust the weight as needed. Even at the same dimensions, you will obviously get different weights/mass depending on the choice of aluminum vs. brass vs. steel etc.

Nice work on the project so far and I will look forward to seeing more if it!!

Bill

Hello Michelko

The bugatti flywheel should look alot like this. I milled slots in mine where gear teeth should be. Thats about all i can tell you about it.

I'm sure you've thought of this, but if that supercharger is going to be a working one you could have problems with that Walbro/Tillotson carburettor - they need pressure pulses to drive the diaphragm pump where the supercharger will just give a fairly constant "suck".

I believe that Bugattis had quite small flywheels. I don't know if these links will help at all:

For the 50T i believe the drawing to be real close.

Your Buggati engine is a work of art, do you have any more pics I am sure we would all like to drool over them, also could you reveal some info, like all made from solid or some castings etc.
Thanks

Hello Mike!

My Bugatti engine is a piece of crap. The work of art is a Pocher model of a 50T that I built years ago. It is 1/8 scale and the models are so well made and true to the original piece that they regularly sell on Ebay for well over a grand for an unbuilt model.

Well you had me fooled, but that model looks well worth $1k. Buggati’s are automotive works of art! There was a Buggati exhibition at the Royal College of Art in London around the late 1970’s where they had many examples from a Royal to Type 57 grand prix cars. Across the road from the collage is Hyde Park with a half mile strip of tarmac, several owners were driving their wonderful machines, Buggati engines have a unique exhaust note, a real bark.

Good luck with the chassis of your current project.
