Ring and Pinion
« on: August 02, 2014, 08:26:44 PM »
I have been scaling down the 9 inch rearend that George built to see if it would be possible to do at 20% (George is at 30%) and it turns out that it may be possible. I found that the smallest bevel gears that SDP sells can be made to fit. The bearings can be fudged and the splines will need to be replaced with a .188 square in the large spider gears. The only thing holding me back right now is cutting the ring and pinion gears. I downloaded the spread sheet that steamer produced and am having a hard time understanding what all the data means.

Is there a website or book that I can read that will explain what all the things on the sheet mean? I think my biggest problem is that I don't know the lingo. If I have the lingo explained to me, other than the fact that I have never cut a gear, this should be easy. I guess I just don't know where to start.

Where do I start?

Hey Steve,

The spreadsheet is a direct copy of all the calculations that Kozo used to make skew bevel gears.   I checked them against his calculations.  If you look up his article, it will give you a blow by blow of all the parameters to make the cutting fixture, the cutters and the gears.....

It's in Kozo's book,  "Building the Climax"

Dave

Thanks Dave!

I just uncovered the artical in Live Steam from August of 1983. I saw the magazine referenced in Georges thread but it was a long road to find it. There is no searchable index. I'm going to start to read it and see if it will help me understand all this stuff. Thanks for the lead.
