Oh no, not again...
« on: July 10, 2014, 12:20:58 AM »
Hi there. I'm a new arrival returning to making stuff after the usual "marriage & kids" interruption. My background includes the usual messing with cars & kit cars, aeromodelling and a few other hobbies that I can't mention (not until the restraining order expires). I used to compete in RC Pylon Racing (at all levels including world champs) and did a fair amount of engine-building at the high-performance end of things as well as making tuning parts for RC helicopters. I was fortunate to have access to a friend's well-equipped machine shop which meant that my own basic lathe (which I've already posted about) and mill tended to get ignored, and then I got married. Things then got packed away (and the mill was sold because we didn't have room for it). I'm now looking to return to this hobby as time and funding permit...

 :hi: Pete  :naughty:

Do you still have any of your old racing engines hidden away? I am sure the members would like to see them and hear about what you used to do to them to eek out more and more power.

This may or may not be of interest. As I mentioned above, part of my background is in racing radio-controlled aircraft. The primary class of RC racing uses 6.5cc two-stroke glowplug engines, and these engines use special flat-coil, tapered seat glowplugs at the rate of one per flight. One of the things I did was to rewire my own plugs (the wire is a special platinum-rhodium-iridium alloy that comes through "bullion" suppliers at a cost of around £10 per foot!) and to do this I made this spot-welding machine. The electrical side of it was simple 10uF-worth of metalised paper capacitors that were charged from a 12v source and then shorted across the joint. The fixture took electrodes made by turning down standard berilium-copper (IIRC) spot-welder electrodes.

As you will see - I am one of the few people who has managed to do something useful with a Unimat-1!! I have two of these - I won one in a raffle and the other was given to me for spares!
