Oh yeah, has anyone had a response from them?

Hi Eric,
I got a reply from them today.  It was from 'Stephanie'.  I think all their customer service reps are named Stephanie :).

It basically said thanks for your comment, they appreciate it, but they are not at liberty to talk about other customer's issues.  And just so I know, all their products come with a 1 year warranty and they stand behind all their sales with lots of technical support.

It was a nice letter. It appeared to be several boiler plate pieces spliced together.  Just my impression; I don't really know.

I was going to quote it here, but then I saw a the bottom of the mail it pretty much said I couldn't do that. All their correspondence is confidential and not for redistribution.  So I you just get the summary here.

Good luck with the 2 minute spindle replacement Eric.  Hope this solves your problem.  And if not, I hope they stand behind their product!

Well Eric
Have you sorted the grinder?

It's a sad state of affairs when you have to fix the goods yourself

I did have a problem with my new Myford lathe but they did send out there fitter and he rebuilt the headstock with new bearings ,he was on site for half a day very careful first thing he did was to check the lathe for level before he did anything else

Stuart
My aim is for a accurate part with a good finish

Eric,

Do you have a diagram of how this spindle goes together?.....I'd like to take a look.

Just saw your thread Eric.
I'm hoping it's more good news than bad.
Best wishes.

Same here Eric....hope you will be able to turn the tide on the Grizzly news of late, even though the solution still isn't ideal. I hope everyone appreciates the openness with which you and Don have reported these issues as it certainly can help other members and we can hope may even wake up the Grizzly folks to their shortcomings in providing FULL customer service!!

Also hoping for better news. The suspense is killing us.
I think I'd be near the point of putting the machine on a trailer and driving to Grizzly.
Best,
Stan

Thanks for looking everyone. Zee, can I say it? CRAP. I sent video of the machine running and a pic of the surface finish to them this morning. It is running a whole lot smoother but there is still some vibration. As far as the surface finish, there is only one place else to look, and I'm going to take the table off again and check the ball glides. If that  ain't it, its got to be the vibration that's causing the piss poor finish. Stay tuned for news.

Big E...in all this process of replacing the motor and spindle especially, did you rebalance and true up the grinding wheel again? I am figuring you probably did, but that could also be the cause of more minor vibration and a poor finish .

Here is my opinion of what Grizzly should say to Don, and others: "We are truly sorry you are having a problem with our machine. You are out of the 2 year no-cost warrantee period, but are in the unlimited after sales good-will period, and we will sell you the parts you need at a wholesale/dealer price and give you all of the tech support and assistance we can, including the expert knowledge of our people who have probably seen this problem before many times. We will take ownership of your problem and make it ours until it is fixed.
Thanks for buying Grizzly".
Are you listening Grizzly? You should be.

Thanks for all the support guys. Bill, yes I'm rebalancing and redressing and have tried about 5 different wheels. I've dressed one so much it looks like a wheel for a MicroMark bench grinder :lolb: ( not really). Also Bill, I see that I have not posted it, but, I did get a call from a customer service manager last Thursday and he said that they were "hearing" I wasn't happy about having to work on the grinder as "we had agreed". I told him that no, I wasn't happy about it and thought it not right that I should have to, but, at this point it was just the easiest thing to do. Don, my patience is getting thinner by the day, but, I'm trying not to revert back to my bar brawling, hard hat throwing, and cussing ways; easier on the blood pressure. Stan, you have given me a great idea. I soon will probably be coming to Va. and maybe I should just put it on equipment skates, load it in one of my trailers, strap it down, and back up to their dock in Pa. and let them join in the pleasure. I didn't hear a damn word yesterday from the video I sent them other than an email thanking me for sending it and assuring me it had been forwarded to the senior support tech. Now I know this may sound silly, but, at this point I'm just damn curious as to what is wrong with it. Since my father suggested adjusting the end gap on the spindle to motor coupling a tad, the vibration and sound is better, ten fold, so, maybe we are on to something there. Also, I don't have anything to compare the vibration to and maybe now I'm paranoid and it's not what's causing my surface issues. When I ground the first piece with it and thought it was me doing something wrong, I showed Steamer a pic of the finish and he ask then if I was sure the ball glides and ways were sanitary when I put the table on, then my brother-in-law pointed out the vibration. So now that the vibration has been greatly reduced, maybe the glides are causing the rest of my finish woes. I'll try to post up the video and surface pics latter today, if y'all are interested. Okay, enough rambling. Y'all come see us now ya hear

Eric

I made a comment on your whats in the box to the effect as send it back

but as we are here I have done the grinding wheel course to enable me to comply with the regs/code for wheels ect at work ( note in the UK its up to you what you do at home )

your machine you should without a wheel on be able to balance a coin on the bed and it should stay still and not fall over.

when you say you are balancing the wheel on the arbour are you doing it on knife edges ?  note that has to be correct before you progress

then you dress the wheel on the machine

please accept my apologies if I am trying to teach you how to suck eggs

when I did my course we had to do a surface grinder , a cylindrical grinder all with 18 inch by 2 wheels

when you had done that you had to present your test pieces for inspection and only then did you get your sticky foot

what does the spindle sound like when you use a screwdriver as a stethoscope is it a nice hiss ( assuming that this one has rolling element bearings ) ?

Just a little update for those following along. But, first of all, Stuart, don't worry about the eggs, I like 'em. Seriously though, yes, that's exactly the way I've been balancing and dressing the wheel. It will let an American nickel sit on the chuck and even the wheel guard with the wheel on it. However there is a harmonic resonance that is showing up in the finish, besides the fact that you can hear it running 60 feet away. Today I came to serious terms with Grizzly. I since have spoken with a manager in customer service and the head of Q.C. in the home office, who has contacted the factory for possible answers. They are now fully aware of the fact that I'm not a carpenter, rigger, or equipment moving specialist, so, re-crating and shipping ain't my AOR ;). I am now at the point that I am kinda enjoying seeing how this is going to play out. I'm going to include this pic of the finish it's leaving and if anyone wants to endure the Photosuckit download of a video I sent them feel free to browse my account (ain't no naked pictures of Lou in it :lolb: :lolb: :lolb: :lolb: :lolb: sorry Zee)
