Tjark

You are not far off.  Good luck on your next try.  Bye the way, did you make the boss for the oil inlet?  Below are a couple of photos of the casting I hade for the front part of the crankcase.

Enjoy

Vince

p.s.  If you are in the mood you can also do a boss for the oil drain hole.

Vince and Jo, thanks for the photo’s  yes I realized that I forgot this one.
Have to modify the pattern, not a big issue.

Another thought... The front crankcase spigot is left over length to allow for a chucking piece for machining the back  ;).

Jo, nice that you noticed the differents in the  spigot.
But i have made the front case spigot longer then needed.
I also made the spigot over the hole length tapered.
So it will release easy from the forming sand.
At the inside off the crankcase I made an extra piece off  round aluminum in the middle off the bearing place, you can see it in the picture.
So I can clamp it short on the crankcase wall.
So I will work the other way, I clamp the crankcase first at the inside to machine the spigot this way to a parallel round piece for clamping later.
Also I can center the spigot, this is not possible when clamping first at the spigot.
Out off experience I know that clamping on castings can get you in a lot off trouble and I hope to overcome those this way.

Nice work Tjark! It will be my next step too to try casting after I have my machines finished including the accecoires. Takes a lot of time to finish that last 20%.

Is this your first experiance with casting? Can you post a picture of the funish you use?

Thanks, regards Jeroen

Jeroen, I have started casting around 2006 / 7.
Bought a furnace from someone who casted a lot off years  for hobby and switched to a electric furnace.
The furnace I use is a home build charcoal furnace.
It took some time to get the casting right, mostly I had shrinking problems.
Then I bought a book who was written by  CW Ammen called Casting Aluminum and there I saw the light.
When you like to make a start with casting aluminum I can recommend this book.

Thank you for the tip on the book Tjark. I will order it and start to  :happy reader: I hope that when I really start casting I can pass by one day, think we are not that far apart, and watch you do a cast. That would give me quite a jumpstart!

Looking forward to your progress on the Kiwi.

Jeroen, that will be no problem.
I have made today some test castings again, with the modification Vince pointed out.
The castings are getting now almost to the end stadium so I can cast some crankcases who are worded to get a heat treatment.
Have also made a tryout off the machining  I had in mind.
It looks that all is coming together this way.
First picture ; new casting with modification Vince pointed out.
Second picture ; inside boss for clamping the first time.
Third picture ; Spigot turned
Fourth picture ; Insite turned, don’t look at the casting flaws.
Those failures are due to old molding sand what loosen up when molten aluminum  is poured.
Fifth picture ; After milling the cylinder base the top is completely square to the base.

Achim , I have made a threat where you can see a part off my backyard foundry.

   Tjark .

Tjark, I think you probably mean 'thread' instead of 'threat'. It's one of those times when the transposition of a letter changes the meaning of the word entirely, and not always for the best. Your project is, by the way, an absolute treat.

Cheers, Hugh.

Hugh, here you can see that English is not my native language.
You are right sometimes one letter brings up something stupid,  and words not intended.
Thanks for the correction.

Hi Tjark, thanks for pushing me into the right direction. I like these back yard foundries. May be one day I can do this too.
Kind Regards
