Building the Benson Vertical Steam Engine
« on: May 21, 2014, 11:46:52 PM »
Today is my start at building engines again.   :cartwheel: I have spent almost two years making tools, not complaining mind you. Making tools is as satisfying as making engines and helps a lot with making engines. I have had this engine on the back burner every since I followed Jason making his. It's a beautiful and elegantly designed engine and more of a show case model. So this will be my attempt to capture its beauty and hopefully do it justice.
Ok I started by making a few parts starting with the base and it's flanges. Tomorrow if I get a chance I will be doing the column.
This first photo is a flange plate that the column will mount to and the pump.

Rounding the edges on the rounding table.

Tapping the holes after drilling on the UPT.

And I guess you will be upset with me because in the process of making the base I failed to take photos of the process. I cut the base out on the band saw after laying it out on a piece of corain.and smoothed the edges on the die filer. Then used a file and sand paper to smooth it enough to route it. Below is a photo of the flange and base complete.

That's all I have for today and thanks for looking.

Looks like it's going to be a beauty, Don.  The Benson is one of my favorites.

Looking good so far, seems like you have opted to keep it at the original size.

Simon, this is my build, click the links for the various parts. Also shows anyone who wants to try it how the corian base is done.

Thanks Jason.

Love this quote from the Nottingham Daily Express - "....it was inspected by many practical men, who expressed their unqualified admiration for it'  ;D

Guys thanks for following along, I will need the support.

Looking good so far, seems like you have opted to keep it at the original size.

Yes I prefer to keep it the same size.  I don't think I could do a bigger flywheel in my lathe. Jason I hope you kept me straight, if you know I am on the wrong track building it.

Today was a good day and I started and finished the column. I also made a start on the entablature. I am trying to decide if I should pin or screw the entablature together for soldering. I guess I will decide when I cross that road.
Ok the first photo I set a 6" x 1.5" piece of brass into the three jaw chuck and used the steady to hold the end for facing and drilling each end to .312".

After marking the points with the warner parting tool, I set the compound slide to 2 degrees to cut the tapers.

After cutting the taper I need to make a profile tool to cut profiles on the column. I set a piece of tool steel in the vise and cut the end with a 10 degree relief and used a .1875 slot drill to one end and a .156" on the other end.

The finished profile too after Harding it.

Finishing the columns profiles with the new tool.

Doing some profiling with a graver and my Quick change tool rest

Parting of the column and I used a piece of 5/16" cold roll in the chuck to support it once parted.

I moved the column to the mill to drill the top holes that will secured the entablature after finding center and using the DRO function for the six holes.

Next I mounted the angle plate to the mill to mount the column horizontal to mill the face of the column pump bracket will bolt to.

Found center and edge of column and drill the pump bracket mounting holes.

With the column finished I started making the entablature parts. I first started with the bottom base flange on the lathe. While on the lathe I set up my Foredom to drill the mounting holes on the flange. I spotted the center with a spot drill and found center, dial in the dimensions. Using my Dividing attachment to get the six hole patterns.

I made the sides and bearing mounting brackets. Cut the sides on the bandsaw a filed then to shape. This photos shows the parts made so far. I still need to drill holes in the side pieces and cut slots into the entablature flange for silver soldering.

That's it for today and thanks for looking.

Don

Nice work Don!

The Column turned out real nice, did you harden the profile tool?

Oops I see where you did harden it
