Melbourne Model Engineering Exhibition 2014
« on: May 21, 2014, 11:06:33 PM »
The Model Engineering Exhibition is in Melbourne this year: http://www.onlymelbourne.com.au/melbourne_details.php?id=15862#.U30iPvmSwXw

There seems to be some interest in having a venue for HMEM and MEM folk to meet. Reg and I are going and Gus (The Happy Fisherman) says he might come down.

I am thinking about having a MEM table where we can display some models and which would serve as a focal point for meeting.

What do you think?

I've been threatening to attend that for quite a few years now - might have to scrape some pennies together and make this the year!

I have sent off an entry form so we will see what happens.

Can anybody recommend somewhere to stay down there?

That would make a MEM presence at what?...3 shows now? Cabin Fever, the UK, Melbourne.
Truly 'A Global Community'.
Maybe there's a way to make that more pronounced at a show.
Pictures of other shows with the MEM banner in the background?
Shipping engines around probably wouldn't work well. Risky too.
A binder maybe? With pictures of members' projects?
Sorted by location? Maybe random instead.

Not a simple project really. It would take some time (which I don't have yet).

Just thinking.

Enjoy the show Jim and others. Tel...you don't need pennies. You've got a thumb.

I think it would be neat if we could send the banner from show to show and have it marked some way to show where all it's been. Just an idea.

That's a really neat idea Whiskey, it is nice to see that you are still lurking and thinking.

Now all I have to do is to get an entry form in; my last email was rejected. Perhaps it's some inter-state rivalry.

No worries Ginger Nut, it doesn't happen until 4 October -  2 months away.

You have plenty of time to save your lunch money and get organised.

Jim

Not too worry. As we get older time does seem to fly past way to quick. I imagine that jet lag doesn't help.

Glad to hear that you and SWMBO had a good trip to the US. :)

I've just entered it for then Jim, but think I've made a hash of removing it from May - working this calendar is a rather convoluted business.

Thanks Tel, I don't think it will matter if it is still shown in May (nobody will go to it then) as long as it is shown in October.

We have a table set aside for us. The bloke organising the exhibition is in Tasmania with family matters at present but I have spoken to the President who assures me we are ok.

And it is still some (unspecified number of) months away.

I was going to do a post about it but you got there first. Monash Uni is a long way from a railway station and there are not many hotels close by. I could post a map to show where it is in the Uni grounds.

Thanks Airmodel, we do need to identify some accommodation in the vicinity or within easy reach and which also has facilities for we out of town folk to socialise (read: eat, drink and make memories).

Lennardhme over on HMEM has offered to scout around but it wouldn't hurt to have more eyes searching.

Steve has a good link, click onto it and then click onto the "Click here to view map". Move the map north until you see the main entrance of Monash uni and follow "ring road east" traveling north. Turn left on Union road until you see Engineering building 60 and that is where the show is. On that weekend there will be plenty of signs to direct you to the show. hope this helps.

Well guys, the bad news is that the Exhibition will not be held this year. The following is the message I received from the  organiser:

Hi Jim

As the grape vine says we have unfortunately had to cancel the exhibition this year.
We were recently informed that there will be considerable disruption to our exhibition venue at Monash University, Clayton, in October due to building works. The disruption extends to parking and vehicular access. We have tried to find an unbooked alternative location, but total hire costs made this an unviable alternative.
At the last meeting of the organising committee for the 2014 MSMEE Model Engineering Exhibition it was reluctantly decided that no exhibition will be held this year. After some 22 years of exhibition management we are dismayed at this outcome.
We appreciate that there was some interest in an exhibition  but the reality is that it is not practicable for our exhibition to be held this year. However our wish is that we will hold another one in two years’ time.
Regards
John

Tel,

Alternate years it is Bendigo (or is it Ballarat? I get confused easily).

The good news is that we don't have to rush to get that special machine painted in time.

Can't quite tell, Tel, are you a judge, or Douglas Mawson? Bendigo sounds good, and a good excuse for the Jerildarie, Deniliquin Echuca run. Great trip that one. Hugh.

I realise this is selfish but it conflicted with my 55th reunion of our class of 59 joining the RAN, (for which I'd already booked and paid), so  maybe I now can make it to the next one.

'Tis indeed an ill wind which blows nobody any good.
