That's a neat gadget, Don, and a nice job of machining
I've thought of building one more because I find it an interesting device, than the the actual final result of making cutters!

Thanks for showing it to us.

Joe

Hope you don't mind Don.

Here are a few renders.
I made each part a different colour for ease of seeing each part.
There is also a 3D PDF to have a look all around and at each part.
Hope this helps people who want to make this tool.
Cheers.

Darren,

Thank you for those renders. I am having trouble viewing the 3D pdf. I have to select I trust the document. Then in the middle of the page is a box "Enable 3D view", if I click on this then I get back to the question about trusting hte document. Circular loop.

I am using Adboe Acrobat Reader DC 15.016.20039.

any tips on solving this display issue very much appreciated.

well it seems I must have some security settings on my (work) laptop. If I select only trust the document once it displays. If I select always trust it it will not display.

Super job on the renders and 3D pdf!

I was equally confused by the tool Zee, so its not just you.  I watched all the videos on the other thread and am still not certain I really understand what this cool little gadget does. Something about cutting relief for a gear cutter? But couldn't you do that more easily just using a dividing head on the mill?
But it is cool, I have to admit!
Kim
Kim,
This works with the button cutters. While you could, on a mil, shape the periphery of the cutter, this lets you profile each segment of the cutter blank. It changes the effective center of rotation of the blank on the lathe as you are cutting the profile. It's easier to understand if you see the whole process so I hope that Don makes a video of "cutting a cutter".

Made a "test piece" cutter with mine. The "forward slant" of the buttons need to be rather aggressive (I guess rather more than 10 degrees) as there is not enough front clearance otherwise. This brings another issue up, the top rake is compromised by this, so the buttons have to cut and ground at quite exaggerated angles for this to work at all.

The clearance angle is diminished due to the forward acting movement of the blank when the a cut is done.

Otherwise, this thing does work and is quite fascinating to watch during operation.
